Go Remote with Your Cell Phone
You know about Global Positioning System (GPS) in vehicles. You have a cell phone. Now your cell phone can use GPS to guide you through the great outdoors.
It's called Trimble(R) Outdoors, the first outdoor recreation solution that uses Nextel's GPS- and Java-enabled cell phones for navigation and trip planning. Whether hiking, biking, boating, hunting, fishing or other off-road activity, your phone can guide the way. See www.TrimbleOutdoors.com or www.Nextel.com.
"Since many people already carry phones into the outdoors for safety, our solution eliminates the cost and inconvenience of buying a conventional handheld GPS," said Rich Rudow, managing director of Trimble Outdoors. "With Trimble Outdoors, your Nextel phone can do the job for a fraction of the cost."
Trimble Outdoors shows you where you've been and how to get back to where you started, as well as a compass direction and distance to where you are going, latitude, longitude, altitude, and speed. You can easily plan and review trips online, move trip information wirelessly to your Nextel phone and use your phone as a navigation device complete with topographic, street, and aerial maps to guide your adventure.
Sacramento computer consultant Ken Mitchell uses his Nextel i710 with Trimble Outdoors to explore areas such as the Florida Everglades and find GPS coordinates published on www.geocaching.com.
"It's been handy to have GPS built into my cell phone," says Mitchell. "Instead of three gadgets -- a cell phone, GPS and walkie talkie (all of Nextel's handsets include a walkie talkie) -- I just need one. It makes life easier and a little more fun."
Chicago area technical consultant Phil Schuman uses his Nextel i860 camera phone with his son's Boy Scout troop, for hiking, geocaching and even presentations on GPS for the troop. Schuman plans the hikes on the Web site, downloads waypoints and later posts pictures from the trip for others to view.
"There's nothing comparable to Trimble Outdoors," says Schuman. "It's great for planning hikes; you can share your trips and maps on the Web site."
Trimble Outdoors can be used with Nextel GPS- and Java-enabled phones anywhere on the Nextel nationwide network, and Trimble Outdoors GPS works inside or outside the Nextel network even in the most remote places.
Trimble Outdoors is available at Nextel Retail Stores and at www.nextel.com and www.trimbleoutdoors.com.
