Skin Health

When you ask children what the largest organ of the human body is they will likely get it wrong and give many guesses that only mention the internal organs of the body. Many adults may have once learned this information and filed it away because they would probably not need to know it again, but the largest organ on the body is, in fact, the skin.

The skin protects and covers many areas of our body. We go about our daily tasks without thinking about it, however, because of its importance in keeping unwanted things out of our body, we should pay more attention to it than we do and maintaining good skin health will pay off for us in the long run.

One of the major problems most people encountering ensuring good skin health is keeping the moisture level in the skin at a decent rate. Even people who have oily skin will have dry patches of skin somewhere on their body that need to have their moisturizer restored from time to time. Using a moisturizer is essential to keeping water in the skin and to prevent the outer layer of the skin from looking lifeless.

Dry skin can also peel and flake. Extremely dry skin can be painful, but even if skin is not flaking, the outer layer of our skin, the epidermis, is comprised mostly of dead skin. Normally the skin will peel off on its own, but sometimes we need to help the process along and exfoliate. Rough patches of skin on the feet and on the back are the most likely to need this treatment, and removing the outer layer of dead skin cells on the face can help keep the pores from clogging.

The reasons to care for the skin are many. It is the bodies main line of defense against bacterial and viral invaders. We often worsen its condition by acquiring the many cuts and scratches we acquire through our lives which give bacterial and viral invaders even more chances to get into the body. All that is true, but the most important thing we can do for our skin that helps out all other areas of our body is to drink plenty of water. Taking in the required amount of water ensures a ready supply of moisture to the cells and it keeps your skin looking (and feeling) soft and supple.
