Whose Side Is Bush On?

Alex Zakson
President Bush and his administration have repeatedly admonished us to stay the course because the terrorists are out to destroy our way of life. They cite 9/11 as the landmark act of Al Qaeda, declaring war on the American way of life, and a threat to our security.

To combat the enemies of our way of life, Mr. Bush has repeatedly taken steps that have elicited condemnation at home and abroad from Americans, our allies and our adversaries. Mistreatment of prisoners, torture, indefinite detention, suspending human rights of suspected terrorists, and most recently, spying on U.S. citizens without court order are just a few examples of the administration’s indefensible actions.

If the goal of Al Qaeda and other terrorist organizations is to destroy the American way of life, I submit that with help from the overzealous Bush administration, they have been quite successful. Abridgement of our freedoms is a definite step towards undermining our way of life.

What I fear most is that during the remaining 3 years of the Bush presidency, we will hear about other actions that his administration has or intends to take that will further curtail our hard earned freedoms, and move us further away from the American way.
