The Atkins Diet

Critics of the the diet point out that the doctor who came up with it died just slightly overweight. Medical records show that this was due to other health complications rather than the diet itself. It seems nearly impossible that anyone would be familiar with the no carbohydrates diet that he pioneered, but perhaps a brief explanation would help for those who need their memory refreshed.

Dr. Atkins theorized that a diet rich in protein and almost absent of carbohydrates makes people feel fueler and want to eat less. A recent report by the BBC world news confirms that protein sends signals to the body that tells the stomach that it is full. Many people who first start on the Atkins diet are amazed that although the diet lets you eat as much protein as you want, the urge to eat large amounts of protein rich foods like nuts, meats, fish and eggs is not there. Thus, we can conclude that the Atkins diet works because it suppresses the appetite causing you to eat less.

The human body is not designed to live solely on a diet of meat and proteins and staying on the Atkins diet for a long period of time can have adverse health affects. (It is also not the best diet for people who need to cut back on fats and cholesterol.) But cutting back on processed sugars while coming off the diet may be a good idea as the body processes them more quickly. Substitute many favorites such as white bread with a whole grain wheat products and if you enjoy rice, why not try brown?

The late Dr. Atkins sparked an entire industry that specializes in making low carbohydrate products, but while starchy and sugary foods are bad for the person on a diet, they cannot be avoided all together and once the weight loss goals of the person on a low-carbohydrate have been achieved, it is time to start a long-term nutritional plan that allows the dieter to maintain weight while supplying what the bodies needs in sufficient potions. The Atkins diet is one of the quickest ways of losing weight on the market because it reduces the appetite of the dieter, and unlike many of its competitors involves many foods that people like to eat. Perhaps the last bit is the reason the Atkins diet started a weight loss revolution.
