Finally A Debate That Was A Debate

Ken Hughes
The last two Republican debates finally offered the voters a look at the candidates as they are [sans] the You Tube foolishness. The debate was periodically laced with sarcastic innuendo otherwise they were very informative for the first time in this campaign.

Fred Thompson as it turned out was every bit the Statesman of the group, I’m not sure the public is ready for a statesman. Statesmen are only crowned as such after their service to the nation is over. Fred Thompson has a long and distinguished career serving his country in a variety of positions. If he doesn’t become the nominee I have no doubt his services will continue to be put to work for the benefit of the nation.

John McCain came off like the kid who wasn’t chosen as captain of the Sand Lot football team. He was surly and argumentative. John McCain has proven himself to be a RINO [Republican in Name Only.] in legislation after legislation. When the public challenged his positions he managed to spin his way out. In his 27 years he has backed more progressive, [aka socialistic] legislation than conservative. McCain belongs on the other side of the isles of congress.

I would gladly trade John McCain for Joe Lieberman and throw in Ron Paul.

Rudy Giuliani came off as a defender of his past more than a man with ideas for the future. Should Rudy become the nominee he’s in for a rough time explaining his past indiscretions, Rudy isn’t the player Bill Clinton was therefore his infidelity isn’t as excusable as Bill’s was. Rudy has been the potential challenger to Hillary for the past 7 years, now that the Clinton campaign is going up in smoke that diminishes Rudy chances of becoming the president.

Mike Huckabee comes off as a bit of an arrogant wise-ass, he seems to be of the opinion the nominating process was over in Iowa. I’m suspect when a candidate wears his religion as a garment for demanding acceptance and respect. Huckabee is far too clever in his one liners besmirching his collogues for my taste. Never trust a man who can call you a bastard without actually using the word and smile.

Mitt Romney seemed to be the most intent on impressing the crowd from New Hampshire, Mitt knows how important it is to make a strong showing in New Hampshire in order to go on to Super Tuesday. For those who question Mitt Romney’s religion as being a detriment, it’s not. Mormons are silent groups who have a block of voters that equals or surpasses most other special interests. Just because they aren’t vocal doesn’t mean they aren’t out there ready to back Mitt, one of their own.

I must admit I didn’t watch the Democratic debate, I’d heard it all before many times, “Change, Change, Change continually change. The change I see coming with a Democratic President and Congress means an economy destroyed. It means the Reagan plan for economic prosperity will be destroyed. It means the Bush plan for security of this country will be destroyed. It means Al Qaeda will be set free to travel around the word murdering at will. It means we will be facing a world without security and soon without hope.

I have no intention of commenting on the Democratic candidates, I leave that to others. However I will comment on Hillary Clinton because of her unique circumstance in the campaign.

Hillary Clinton has been touted as the first woman president for the past 15 years. Her image has been pre-fabricated beyond believability. It’s obvious she’s learned to accept her fabricated persona as fact. Therefore lays the danger Hillary may not be able to accept defeat with humility. Hillary and her people were singing to the choir and not reaching out to the public. I have no respect for any of Hillary’s proposals I do have sympathy for her situation. She’s been run up the flag pole and saluted for the past 30 years, now the flag is changing and she can’t understand why.

The Democrats are right when they say Washington needs change. It needs changes in congress more than anywhere. Let’s all vote for new members of congress and get rid of the incumbents. Let’s start the rest of the 21st century on the right track with new thinking by a new informed Congress.
