The expression "pursuit of happiness" was coined by Dr. Samuel Johnson in his 1759 novel Rasselas. For such an old phrase, it’s about time that someone wrote a book to tell us just how to do that. Marci Shimoff, best known for her Chicken Soup for the Soul series books and her recent appearance in the movie The Secret, seems highly qualified and up to the task. Shimoff along with co-author Carol Kline has just released her new book Happy for No Reason: 7 Steps to Being Happy from the Inside Out. The book is full of practical exercises, real life stories and new insights into the science of happiness. Shimoff spent years doing research, in depth interviews and developing and perfecting strategies to create happiness. According to Shimoff, we all have a “happiness set point” that is approximately 50% genetic and 50% learned. She believes it is possible to reprogram our happiness set point to higher levels of peace and well being.

Shimoff takes the knowledge of The Secret and creates a powerful three pronged approach using not only the law of attraction (from The Secret), but also explains how you must use the Law of Expansion and the Law of Universal Support to create lasting internal happiness. The book provides 21 core happiness habits and each chapter includes exercises and a summary of happiness steps. The book is much more than the traditional think and be positive self help book in the market place today. In addition to these exercises, Shimoff provides 11 pages full of resources for everything needed to heal emotionally, physically, mentally and spiritually. From the Emotional Freedom Technique (sometimes called needle-less acupuncture) to Qigong to neuro-audio technology there is likely some new technique that you can use to alter your bodies energy and increase your happiness level.

Probably most unique is Shimoff’s gifted story telling ability. No doubt this skill was perfected from her series of Chicken Soup for the Soul books. These human-interest stories keep the reading practical yet interesting. The foreword is written by Co-author of the Chicken Soup series Jack Canfield who writes, “I call Marci the ultimate magical manifester.” I’m certain that if you follow the practices of this dazzling new book, you too will manifest a lifetime of happiness.”

I bought this book for myself and read it over the Christmas holiday. I have already added three new activities to my happiness routine. It's still early, but I like the positive changes I have experienced so far. Shimoff has put a new twist on an old question and we all have the opportunity to benefit. With so many people in the world being unhappy, this book may just be the prescription we've been waiting for.
