Role Of Weight Loss Industry

Angela Rogers
The level of obesity in the United States is appalling. The average weight of adult women is 164, the average man, 191. This reflects a 25 pound gain over the past 15 years, and is certainly cause for concern. The causes of obesity seem to relate to changes in lifestyle, as follows:

1. More sedentary work and leisure lives. With the change from a manufacturing to an information society, work life has become far less active. Even farmers, with new technology and machinery, are finding that far less physical labor is required. With the increased inactivity comes a lower level of metabolism and thus additional storage of fat in body cells. Thus comes weight gain. As well, our leisure time seems to be far less physical. Television, computers, and video games have resulted in children and adults who do not develop regimens of physical activity. Part of this is the fault of adults who do not force themselves or their children into physical activity. Part of this is the “fear” factor, that is, parents are afraid to allow their children to leave home by themselves.

2. Reliance on fast food has become epidemic in the United States and is fast becoming the rule in developed countries all over the world as well. As busy as our lifestyles are becoming, the easy way to feed families is to stop on the way home or to pull those frozen meals out of the freezer. The amount of fact in one Big Mac is 33 grams, the daily maximum for most people of normal weight, and far too much for those who are trying to lose.

It is unlikely that changes in habit that cause obesity will cease. With this in mind, the weight loss industry has exploded. In the year 2000, the total spent on dietary aids of some sort was $30 billion. This amount continues to rise each year. These companies rely on our laziness and our continued belief that somewhere out there is the “miracle” pill, powder, cream, or drink that will melt away the fat while we watch football games and eat fat laden snacks. So far, this has not been the case, and any weight loss aid has to be accompanied by diet changes and increased exercise.

The weight loss diet industry is booming! It might be wise to invest in some of the producers of these products, take the profits and go visit a weight loss resort!
