Holiday Gift Guide for 11-Year-Old Girls
She's not a baby anymore. She's not a teenager either - and you want to make sure that she realized that too! So what will you give her this Christmas? Something Hannah Montana-ish? No. Anyone can do that, besides, you don't even know if she likes Hannah Montana - or Miley Cyrus - or Destiny Hope Cyrus - or whatever you call her. For you, master shopper, I've compiled a gift guide for you to review that's sure to make your little Tween Princess very happy.
Password Journal (Toys R Us, $22.99)
This is basically your run or the mill voice recognition, password protected, glow light, magic pen, super secret voice command high tech diary. Good luck trying sneak to read this diary! There's even an intruder alert that let's her know when others have tried to gain access to it. Wow, where was this when I was a kid?
Duck Shower Radio (LimitedToo, $15.50)
You remember how it felt to sing your heart out in the shower. Oh wait, you still do that... Well this cute little splash proof radio allows your tween to listen to the radio in the shower, or bath and even floats. It requires three AAA batteries, which are not included.
Growing Up Creepie: Creepie Creatures DVD (Discovery Channel, $14.95)
Your tween can watch six episodes about Creepie, a human girl who was raised by bugs. Her mother is a praying mantis, her father is a mosquito and her brothers are a wolf bug and a pill bug. The DVD is one hour and 17 minutes long.
Jonas Brothers: Bonus Jonas Edition CD (Amazon.com, $17.97)
So if you didn't know, all the little tween girls are drooling over the Jonas Brothers, who have the hit, "S.O.S." Don't get this CD mixed up with the regular release. This version contains two brand new exclusive songs: "We Got The Party" and "Take A Breathe" - a duet with Hannah Montana. What can I say, she's everywhere. The DVD that comes with it contains a full length concert from their sold out show in NYC, as well as the band's music videos.
Mini Fridge (Limited Too, $79.90)
Oh she is just going to think that she is hot stuff with this little fridge that keeps food and drinks hot or cold. It sounds like a super cooler because it includes AC adaptor and the dimensions are 7 1/2" W x 9" D x 11" H. It only comes in pink.
RipStik Mini DLX (Sharperimage.com, $99.95)
They say it combines the excitement of snowboarding and surfing on two wheels, but I think it looks like a two wheel flexible skateboard. It's small and light for your little girl (I mean big girl) to carry, it can hold up to 220 pounds and comes in graphite, red or blue. Too bad it doesn't come in pink!
Power Tour Electric Guitar (LimitedToo, $99.90)
This little rock number teaches her to play with what they call "authentic electric guitar sound." All she has to do is follow the lights on the fret to produce power chords. It reminds me a little of Guitar Hero (which is also an option if she has the appropriate game system). It requires four AA batteries, which are not included.
Fly Fusion Pentop Computer (WalMart, $79.88)
Where was this when I was in school! This pen reads everything she writes on FLY Paper and automatically uploads her notes to her computer and can convert the text into a document that can be saved on her personal computer. Besides features like math tutorials, spell check, and games, the FLY pen can also be used as an MP3 player! Man, kids today have it good!
Hairspray - The Movie Special Edition (Barnes & Noble, $24.49)
This, of course, is the 2007 adaptation of the stage musical Hairspray, which was itself an adaptation of the non-musical John Waters film. The 2007 movie stars Nikki Blonsky as Tracy Turnblad, an overweight high-schooler whose greatest desire is to be on a Baltimore teen dance show. Eventually, Tracy wins a place on the show, but when she becomes wildly popular, she's dealt the wrath of the prettiest girl in school along with her mother (Michelle Pfeiffer) who operates the television station. After Tracy's visit to detention hall she's exposed to the stark reality of racism on the show, at the same time, a relationship blossoms between her best friend (Amanda Bynes) and a boy named Seaweed (Elijah Kelley). Doing what she feels is right Tracy attempts to integrate the races while winning the heart of one of the show's stars, Link (Zac Efron).
Hairspray Soundtrack (Barnes & Noble, $12.99)
Your tween will be singing this whole CD until she knows every song. Especially if she's seen the movie. I must admit... all of the songs on here are really infectious. I find myself every once in a while, belting out "Good morning Baltimore...!" Of course there's also "The New Girl in Town," which is one of my daughter's favorites. "A whoa-whoa-whoa-whoa!"
So there it is. My recommendations all laid out for you to make your shopping for the little miss a whole lot easier on you. I even elicited the assistance of my number one Tween Counselor, who just so happens to be 11 herself. I had to get her approval on all the products that I've just listed, so don't worry, you're in good hands. Happy shopping!
