Weight Loss Support
stick to it, will cut fats, carbs and/or sugars from their diets, and give up going out to eat with friends who tempt them. In short, if you are one of the very, very few people who can motivate yourself and muster up the self-discipline to stay on the diet, continue the exercise, and get those pounds off, you are a superhero in the diet world.
The vast majority of individuals who suffer from long-term overweight conditions or obesity got that way from a variety of things – heredity, poor dietary habits over a long period of time, and an inability to stick with a great number of diet plans. Even with the threat of heart disease, diabetes, clogged arteries, bad knees, etc., many individuals just cannot muster up the motivation and stamina to get the job done.
All over the world there have sprung up a number of diet support groups. Like Gambler’s or Alcoholics Anonymous, these groups exist to provide education about obesity and weight control, to assist members in the development and implementation of a reasonable diet and exercise program, and to hold regular meetings for continued support of the dieter members. In many of these groups, a new member is provided a sponsor who can be contacted whenever the urge to splurge comes or when the weight loss program is becoming unmanageable, either physically or emotionally.
Famous weight loss support groups include Weight Watchers and TOPS(Take Off Pounds Sensibly), however, large churches and most YMCA’s also have support groups for this purpose. As well, for those who have a lot of emotional reasons for eating, there are psychological counseling centers which offer group therapy sessions on a weekly basis for overweight and/or obese individuals. Dependent upon the severity of the condition, an individual will probably need to investigate local groups and find the one that meets his/her individual needs.
A support group can be a wonderful tool for the dieter. It is great comfort to be in the environment of others who understand what your problems are and who are willing to provide the help and support you need to overcome them. As well, these group members are there to celebrate each small success of every member and to provide that additional push of motivation when things become "dark."
