Evolution is Flawed and OJ Didn?t Do It

Proponents of intelligent design claim that evolution is fatally flawed. They would have the public believe that there is serious debate among scientists about Darwin?s theory and whether it could have produced the variety of species we see today.

They remind me of the late Johnny Cochran during the OJ trial. Cochran was successful at creating doubt about what should have been an open and shut case. Despite all of the damning evidence, which included DNA evidence that placed him at the scene and the victims blood in his vehicle, Cochran put on a show and hung his case on the catch phrase ?if it does not fit, you must acquit?. Who can forget the image of OJ struggling to put on a blood soaked leather glove over a pair of latex gloves.

Cochran knew that there were some jurors who just didn?t want to believe OJ could be guilty. He played on that, knowing that despite all of the evidence that said OJ did it; they only needed to see something that could give them an out. He gave them the image of OJ struggling with those gloves.

The Discovery Institute does the same thing. Despite all of the evidence that supports the theory of evolution, they know that there are those who don?t want to believe it could be true because it contradicts a literal interpretation of the Bible. So they have been searching for Darwin?s bloody glove for years. They believe that they have found it in Michael Behe?s idea of irreducible complexity. Behe asserts that there are a few biological systems so complex that their parts could not have evolved slowly because they would not have produced an advantage unless all of the parts were present and working together. The Discovery Institute wants to portray scientists collectively struggling to pull this bloody glove on. ?If it does not fit, you must acquit!?

Of course they will convince a few who already want to believe that Darwin was wrong. But they can?t make the mountain of evidence go away. So they will try to convince their jury that it was planted. They would have you believe that nearly every biologist from Darwin to the present are in on some enormous conspiracy to promote the erroneous theory of evolution.

One more OJ trial moment comes to mind. Johnny Cochran put on a ski cap and asked the jury before and after ?who am I?. Creationists have put on a new cap and tried to pass for scientists promoting a new scientific theory. But just like Cochran, we can plainly see who you are.
