George W. Bush Needs To Listen To The American People
Bush may be making an honest, albeit belated, attempt to be more open with the American people, or he may simply be trying to improve his dismal approval ratings, however this is a welcome development.
The president is not a monarch who rules by executive decree, he is an elected ruler who must answer to his constituents. At this critical juncture in our history, Bush should hold monthly or even weekly press conferences.
I'm glad that the president is being more "open", but it will require more than a few speeches before carefully selected audiences to regain the nation's trust and affection.
In the immediate aftermath of 9/11 Bush enjoyed high approval ratings as well as the trust of the American people. The president can regain such lofty approval ratings, only if he continues this open approach to leadership.
Bush may hate all things Clintonesque, however he would be wise to follow-up his series of speeches with a listening tour of the American heartland.
Dubya has heard enough jibba-jabba from the likes of Rove and Cheney, he needs to listen to normal Americans. Bush surrounds himself with sycophants and yes-men, he needs to hear from citizens in places like New York City, who are not afraid to speak their minds.
George W. Bush is loathe to admit any mistakes, going to war based on faulty intelligence was a huge blunder, but perhaps an even greater screw-up is not listening to the America people. Bush needs to rectify this error immediately, if he wants to salvage his second term.
