George W. Bush Supports Sen. John McCain's Bill Banning Torture
Paris Hilton would have had more credibility if she had trumpeted, "I do not whore around."
It's a sad indictment that the leader of the free world felt compelled to make this announcement, a democracy should be beyond reproach and never be suspected of condoning or practicing torture.
Even though America supposedly doesn't torture prisoners, President Bush recently agreed to support Sen. John McCain's bill banning torture, ending a standoff that had further tarnished America's prestige around the globe.
The Bush administration attempted to spin the agreement as a compromise, but actually it was a capitulation to decency, common sense and the will of the American people.
Sen. John McCain proved that a stubborn and reckless Bush administration can be forced to bend to the will of the American people.
The majority of Americans are frustrated, disenchanted and angry with the quagmire in Iraq. If things don't improve soon, another brave Republican leader needs to stand up and declare that the American people will not tolerate the status quo any longer.
President George W. Bush has been properly chastised, he has learned that he cannot blithely ignore the national and international laws against torture.
Let's hope that he will soon learn that he can't continue an unpopular war for too much longer and he can't blithely ignore the laws that ban the CIA and other secret agencies from spying on the American people.
