What’s Next For America?

Ken Hughes
The successful elections in Iraq gave a strong indication democracy is winning the hearts and minds of the Iraqi people and their fight against authoritarian rule. I can’t recall a time when 75% of eligible voters turned out for an American election. It was obvious segment of the insurgents who are actually Iraqis dissidents chose to vote rather than fight on this day making modern Iraqi history. If history is a teacher, we know the war in Iraq is nearing an end. Not to be confused with the war on terror that surely will linger on for years to come.

When our troops leave the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan what next, where next? I don’t want to sound pessimistic, I know each war we fight is fought to assure we won’t fight the next war. It never happens that way, there’s always the next war [battle] to be fought. America’s been the worlds protector since the defeat of the Barbary Pirates in Tripoli in 1801. When a young United States Marines Officer with 30 of his best men and a few hundred mercenaries cleared the waters of the world of this scourge of piracy on the high seas. No other nation has liberated the vast numbers of oppressed people as America has. No nation has answered the call to assist in disaster relief as America has. More often than not that assist came from the American military.

There’s a reason America is so well adapt for the position God’s assigned it to, leading the world down the road to peace and freedom. Americans aren’t tribal, we come from every nation and tribe of the earth. Americans have learned to coexist. Americans have their internal petty differences when challenged from outside influences they become the strongest nation on earth, and we are damn well ready to prove it. When America sees atrocities committed against a group of people unable to provide their own security, we act on behalf of the oppressed and justly so.

America’s nearing a cross roads. Many of our political leaders are willing to turn a blind eye to the oppression practiced in the world. They chose instead to protect their material wealth and not squander it on those they perceive as undeserving. To paraphrase several leading congress men and women, “How did Saddam Hussein present a threat to America?” He murdered and paid others to murder innocent women and children, his Sons raped and murdered. Twice he chose to invade his neighbors, how much more of a threat can he present? If we Americas can’t stand up for those people he was oppressing what good are we?

Is there no country in the world aside from America who sees evil and wants to see it stopped? Is America the sole moral authority in this world? I believe in our creations by God. I believe God created America to bring order to the universe after years of sending messengers who failed in their assignment. They didn’t fail for lack of trying, they failed because man hasn’t yet learned the lessons God set down in the ten commandments. These are simple rules man has perverted for his or her own interests.

America’s never been at peace. America’s been in conflict through out it’s history. Secretly I believe most Americas are convinced it’s their fait to bring order to the world. When talks fail guns are usually convincing. America isn’t an aggressive nation, it’s a protective nation willing to go on the offensive rather than suffer the destruction of a defense. America’s been able to protect it’s people from invasion by foreign Armies from the beginning. This comes from strength not weakness. This comes from the world’s memory of America’s first flag with the following proclamation “Don’t Tread On Me.”

America’s the greatest country on earth, because we can agree to disagree. In the end, every two years it’s all sorted out at the voting stations. For some, to their liking to others their dislike. America’s Capitalistic, Religious, and Political. These are our heritage and our salvation. May it never change!
