Eco-Product Review - Halls Naturals Cough Suppressant/Oral Anesthetic

Sarah Jowett
It's not even November and I already am the victim of a cold of the worse kind: one that includes a sore throat. I can take runny and stuffy noses, coughing and sneezing, but a sore throat, especially because I have to talk to Connor all the time, is just something I can't deal with it, it drives me nuts.

During my trip to Walgreens earlier today to get some Halls, my favorite throat-soother product, I was standing there looking for the regular Halls drops when I spot a new "100% Natural Menthol" version and decided to try the Wild Cherry flavor, so all number and ingredient comparisons are between the Cherry flavors.

Both the regular and "natural" version share the use of glucose syrup and sucrose, which are not natural versions of sweeteners. The Naturals has less menthol (2.5 mg vs 7 mg for the original version), which would explain why it doesn't seem to work as well.

The rest of the ingredient list in the Naturals version is more "natural" with elderberry juice, ginger and sage, among others. The regular version just contains a list of colors added rather than additional ingredients other than the sweeteners and menthol.

There is nothing on the Halls site related to environmental concern or how, if at all, "natural menthol" is better for you or the environment. Nor does it say anything on the bag.

The flavor is okay but, as I briefly alluded to before, it does not seem to work as well as the regular version. Without any information to the benefits of "Natural Menthol" vs whatever menthol is used in the other products, it doesn't seem to be a plus to be lured by the "natural" label.

I am very committed to all environmental causes and am proud to use the Chronicle's network of news sites to share my write-ups of various environmental issues, products, projects, etc... to help educate and inform those that are passionate and interested in learning more about what they can do to restore what has been lost, repair damage that has already been done and prevent future problems.

I am by no means an expert but I am serious about these causes and hope my little articles and reviews help you determine which products are worth using to prevent catastrophes that we have created by our unbridled usage of Earth's resources and our treatment of the environment at large.

It is more than just high gas prices and depleted oil reserves, it is more than just water conservation and recycling, and many people taking small measures adds up to making a difference.
