Eco-Product Review - Avalon Organics Chamomile Soap

Sarah Jowett
At a local discount grocery store, I found a bar soap by Avalon Organics. I am rather picky about bar soap because I use it for my face (I use body wash for the rest, ha) and I don't like it to make my face too dry, even though I use Oil of Olay lotion every day. I generally use Neutrogena but I wanted to try something different, more natural.

Labeled as "hypo-allergenic extra gentle baby soap" (which I missed when I bought it, ha) with chamomile, it says that it includes "organic" shea butter, aloe and olive oil. There is no USDA Organics logo but a glance at the back of the package lists four different "certifying" agencies that claim the coconut oil, chamomile oil, shea butter and aloe are organic. Two of the organizations are in the US, one is in the UK and one is in Germany, none of which I have ever heard of. Reading through the rest of the ingredients, they do appear to be non-chemically obtained, all natural oils and whatnot.

In addition to creating natural body care products, the company states on their site that they are environmentally conscious with their business policies through various footprint-reducing practices.

Now to using the soap. It is actually a very nice product, especially in the harsh Merced water. It doesn't leave my skin any drier than the Neutrogena and is a nice scent. Definitely a must-try for those with

sensitive skin.

I am very committed to all environmental causes and am proud to use the Chronicle's network of news sites to share my write-ups of various environmental issues, products, projects, etc... to help educate and inform those that are passionate and interested in learning more about what they can do to restore what has been lost, repair damage that has already been done and prevent future problems.

I am by no means an expert but I am serious about these causes and hope my little articles and reviews help you determine which products are worth using to prevent catastrophes that we have created by our unbridled usage of Earth's resources and our treatment of the environment at large.

It is more than just high gas prices and depleted oil reserves, it is more than just water conservation and recycling, and many people taking small measures adds up to making a difference.
