Note to Jerry Falwell: Christmas Is Not Under Attack

Robert Paul Reyes
Christmas is in the air, Christmas is everywhere, Christmas never ends -- or so it seems. Christmas starts soon after Halloween and ends sometime after New Years Day.

My favorite radio station has changed to an all-Christmas format until Dec. 25th, the downtown streets are adorned with Christmas decorations, there's a Christmas party every weekend, the airwaves are full of Christmas specials and Christmas advertisements, Christmas trees are sprouting in millions of homes and there's more Santa Clauses roaming around than you can shake a candy cane at.

Scrooge would be justified in claiming that Christmas has taken over Western Civilization, but incredible as it may seem, some evangelicals are complaining that Christmas is under attack.

"The sky is falling, Armageddon is right around the corner, gays are a threat to marriage and there is a war on Christmas" -- so some Christians insist.

Jerry Falwell is on a jihad to protect Christmas from "godless Atheists", he is turning a time that Christians and non-Christians observe as a season of peace and good will into a time of religious divisiveness and ill will.

Yes Virginia, Christmas is alive and well, and there is no unholy alliance of liberals, atheists and pagans plotting to kidnap Santa Claus and the baby Jesus.

The spirit of Christmas will survive despite the efforts of Grinches and greedy preachers like Jerry Falwell who scare folks into believing that Christmas is under attack to raise funds for nefarious purposes.
