In Honor of Herbal Formularies

Monica King
I am a promise keeper. I bend over backwards to be such a person. It is important to me to have & maintain my own integrity, & for this reason, I am careful about the promises I say I will keep.

I made a promise to a friend in Santa Monica to write about my experiences & impressions while visiting his newly opened herbal formulary. So David, here is this promise, at last fulfilled.

In California, "newly opened" has a shelf life of about 15 seconds. I just surfed the web to find my online references & note that, while I was honored to be this formulary's First Member or client officially this spring, they are doing so well on the website a note says they no longer are accepting new members after October 31st! Now there is a testament to their own beautiful service & philosophies.

You gotta be doing well if you can not accept any new clients!

So, for those who would follow my steps this spring, here is a time very limited offer...get there by Halloween if you too want to check them out! The fastest way to get up to speed is simply to visit them online... without further ado I present to you:

Now, without further delay, the promised review....

When I arrived in Los Angeles this spring it was immediately apparent I had obstacles & challenges to overcome.

My email accounts had been temporarily inaccessible. My website for INEDA had been sabotaged & the index page totally blanked out. Symptoms of being watched & stalked, again, on the web.

This has happened so often now in my life, I was calmly prepared to hide my steps from those who would haunt me, & contacted friends who work to end such practices & violence against women in the LA area. These friends ensured I enjoyed a wonderful time visiting Pink sisters & brothers who are midwifing a peaceful existence on the planet.

David is one such brother. He is a professional nurse entrepreneur who started this Herbal formulary. I contacted him through a couple phone calls reaching out through an ad he had run in a local Santa Monica free periodical.

David immediately calmed me with his presence the first phone contact, & carried through with compassionate care & service which truly made me feel loved & cared for & understood.

He led me through the necessary steps it would take to gain a Doctor's recommendation letter to visit his Cooperative officially, & then he & his staff welcomed me with open arms.

I was delighted to see first hand how they worked to decorate & design the space they have chosen to create for those in need of compassionate & intelligent care.

I was a witness to the birth of the business. Their first official customer too! So this particular formulary will always be special to me. Because David personified for me what we all had been working for for so long...a dignified & mature approach to making medicinal cannabis available to those truly in need of it.

David asked me sensitive questions regarding my medical history & reasons for coming to him. He helped me qualify to use his service first. Next he delivered the medications I was seeking in a way that honored me, him, his business associates, & the products & services they had to offer the public. All the while maintaining my rights regarding my personal medical information, & maintaining my safety while traveling to receive & return from his products & services. No he did not travel with me every step of course, but he always inquired as to how I was traveling & how I could leave with relative ease & maintainenance of safety. I was escorted from the premises with a guard he hired to see to it I got to my vehicle safely.

I note these qualities of my interactions with him because in my own experience, establishing trust first is always a prerequisite to being able to help anybody anyhow. And trust is built & deepens with each encounter that builds it.

David did not treat me specially. I note the quality of our meetings because it exemplifies his approach to ALL people who come to this establishment, & in fact, reflects how nurses are when we are really "walking the walk & talking the talk". INTEGRITY. He is an example of nursing at its finest. A professional who treats all people with dignity & respect first, & maintains a relationship of trust based upon integrity & discretion concerning the sensitive issues brought to him. He holds confidential information with care & provides for appropriate circumstances & an environment which maintains this sacred trust.

He is a midwife, if you will, of a cultural shift rapidly occurring across the nation, but which has really taken hold in southern California first.

How we are moving an adolescent cop & robber chase which the marijuanna debate & history in this country has been this immediate century past, & moved it on to provide a new establishment of a business where you can walk in & feel immediately at ease.

David & his business is a care giver & a comforter. This is at the heart of nursing. To provide care & comfort to those who suffer. Regardless of why. They suffer.

Herbalcure Cooperative is a clean & high ceilinged space that makes you feel good. When you walk in to the establishment, the first thing you note is that there is a guard to ask whether you have this official recommend, the passport to these formularies with you.

If you do not, you are not allowed inside. He wears a uniform. He is essential personnel to the business. It is California law. Every place opened for the purpose of supplying the public with medicinal cannabis must have a security guard.

And this makes sense to me. They are the real gatekeepers, helping to shift the herb out of the battlegrounds where other drug wars are being fought.

They are there to deter the tempting act (for those accustomed to the street life) of jumping a legit customer as they leave the formulary, & jacking their weed from them.

And this simple requirement, written into California law, has had the immediate effect of helping to reduce gang crime by 28% alone in the three months I was in LA this spring. 28%!!!

This was one of the headlines on the Sunday LA Times this late spring as I was heading back to the East. Folks that is HUGE!

Other governors of less enlightened States, take note! When intelligence is applied to circumstances, good things happen, & less bad things happen too.

Herbalcare Cooperative is a stellar example of how we can make less bad things happen to good people & reduce violence in society at the same time. Maybe I am saying they are the same in this instance.

But I can connect the dots of reason here. In southern California, where it is the second largest city on Turtle Island, we can see intelligent people formed new law. This law took a substance, an herb that has existed for thousands of years, & has provided legitimate relief of human suffering, but was getting "bad PR" relatively recently in the human history scheme of things, in a relatively new democracy, America, & LIFTED it out of the context where it was maligned & villified.

They made Mary Jane a legitimate California citizen. They allowed her to work in the land of the free. Set up businesses & cafes where she could entertain & enjoy life & be enjoyed. They allowed her to minister to the sick, the in pain, the sufferer.

And because they removed her from the bad company of the heroin, cocaine, & meth lab folks & dealers, she is now able to do her work unmolested & in peace.

Viola! Gang crime down. Not a couple of measly percentage points, No, but nearly a third less! In a mere three months!

We are a reasoning people & a reasonable people when given the basics. When we are not under fight or flight conditions. We all are.

So, here today I sing praises to David & other nurses like him in California. Alleluia David. Keep on keeping on. We ARE overcoming, & I count myself fortunate for the blessing of your business. I feel better than ever, & I have you & Herbalcare Coop to thank in great measure, for the renewed hope & happiness I found again awaiting me in Santa Monica & Los Angeles.
