“Dear Diary,
What a fun night! After the movies, Jimmy took me to The Sweat Shack. All the gang was already there dancing to a record on the jukebox. We yanked off our shoes and sock-hopped right into ‘Rock ‘Round the Clock’. Jam-packed against another couple, we dodged stomping feet and flailing arms as we hugged closer to make room for a spinning Sally Sue.
Completing her dizzying twirl, she screamed with delight, her chewed piece of saltwater taffy dropping out of her mouth and splattering to the floor. We sidestepped just in time, but unfortunately, Harry the Hooch’s striped-socked foot landed right smack on top of it. Glued to his spot, he attempted to jerk himself free, but then two-hundred-pound Elephant Ed plowed into him. Knocked off balance, Harry fell backwards just as Skinny Slim’s arm flew up, his bent elbow stabbing like an iron poker. Yelling he’d been skewered like a shish ke-bob, Harry leaped away, abandoning his sock to our herd of stampeding feet. He cut the fastest jitterbug we’d ever seen as he fled the room.
The owner, Mr. Spiddles, saw the commotion and pulled the plug on the jukebox. “All right. That’s enough.” Hands on pudgy hips, he glared at us, shaking his head with apparent disbelief. “When are you all gonna grow up and act your age? You’re worse than teenagers. Come back when you can behave like decent grandparents.”
Protesting did no good. We all had to reclaim our shoes and make a quick getaway.
Hmm. I hear the Tangy Tarantula is a spicy place to dance. I think I’ll make Jimmy take me there tomorrow night. Maybe the gang will be there too. Oh, boy, I can't wait! ”
