NLRB in Washington, D.C. Upholds Earlier Decision

Local 507 in Cleveland, which organized 178 blood-collection workers at the Red Cross in September 2004, won an appeal with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) on November 29 upholding the union’s right to represent the workers.

"This has been a 14-month fight, but we are pleased with the NLRB’s decision to give justice to these workers," said Al Mixon, Local 507 Secretary-Treasurer. "We want to begin contract negotiations as soon as possible."

After Local's organizing victory at the Northern Ohio Blood Services division of the American Red Cross, the division appealed the election and filed four objections against the union and one against the regional NLRB.

Earlier this year, the regional NLRB ruled that both the union and the labor board did not engage in any misconduct. The hearing officer recommended certification of the election. The Red Cross then appealed that decision.

On November 29, the main NLRB in Washington, D.C. upheld the earlier recommendation that the election be certified.

The workers are concerned about a lack of respect from management and they want decent wages, Mixon said. Workers are also concerned about the scheduling and pressures related to time spent traveling from site to site. The workers, most of whom are women, service voluntary blood drives in 19 Ohio counties.
