How to put homebrew games on my PSP

There are lots of homebrew games in the internet. These are games that are home-developed and non-commercial. Almost all homebrew games only work on psp firmware version 1.5 and under. This is because Sony has tried to block people from using homebrew games with each firmware upgrade. But before you download and install any game, make sure that the source can be trusted. Remember that bad code can kill your psp.

Before you can play your downloaded homebrew games, you must first learn how to install it:

1. Before you can start installing games on your psp, you must first consider the size of your memory card. This is where data are loaded in your psp and if you’re planning to install many games you may first consider upgrading to a larger memory card.

2. Almost all downloadable homebrew games are zipped in an archive. Uncompress it first and you should find two folders in it. The two folders are of the same name but the other one contains a “%” symbol. (eg. Bubble and Bubble% folders)

3. Make sure that the psp is connected to your pc. You will then need to put your psp in usb mode. Press the HOME button located on the bottom left of your psp and then scroll left to the SETTINGS column. Scroll down to USB CONNECTION and press X.

4. Copy the two uncompressed folders to your psp. The correct file path is PSP > GAME. If you place the game files anywhere else on the Memory card, it will not function properly. If “PSP” and “GAMES” folder does not exist, you need to create it first. Make sure that you name it in ALL CAPS.

5. Once it is finished copying, you can now then disconnect the psp from your pc. From the main menu, scroll over to the GAME column on your psp and then down to the Memory card option. Scroll down in the list of games and you should find your newly installed game there.

The steps listed above however, are not applicable to all homebrew applications. With the growing community of “homebrewers”, there are now so many homebrewed programs out there. Some are complicated and needs specific tools or software to install. If you come across one, just refer to the authors instructions, they are usually enough to assist you in the installation process and if not, try searching it in the internet.

Before downloading any game, make sure that it is compatible with you psp firmware (almost all homebrew games run on firmware 1.5). If you get a corrupted data error, chances are the game that you downloaded is not compatible with your firmware. You may have to downgrade your psp firmware or find another version of the game that is compatible with your firmware.

So I guess by now you are able to grasp some ideas on how to put homebrew games on your psp. It’s not as difficult as you think it is. First thing you need to do is to get started and try out the procedure I highlighted in this article and see if you can make it work on your psp.
