God's Servants Standing in the Gap

Bonnie Alba
In recent years, three great Christian leaders have departed the Earth. Most of us recognize the names Dr. Jerry Falwell and Dr. D. James Kennedy who were at the forefront of major Christian and political grassroots’ movements. Both men had hearts for God, America and her future. Involvement in public service brought them into the mainstream media. Their work is continued by others.

The third man, Dr. Henry M. Morris, is not as well known outside certain circles of interest. But his impact is no less than the other two leaders. He has been given the apt title “Father of Modern Creationism.” He was much more than the title suggests (just as Falwell and Kennedy were much more than their movements).

Dr. Morris established the “Institute for Creation Research” in 1972. He built on the foundation of God’s Word that God is the Creator of the universe--not chance and randomness. He observed the integration of Darwin’s theory of evolution into every facet of Science negating God and his plan for mankind.

Morris viewed evolution, particularly macro evolution or origin of life, as something that could never be proved by scientific method since it was history. The past is unobservable and there exists no repeatable scientific method to test origins.

All his research into the Genesis creation account, with his study of God as Creator along with his background in Science, convinced him that since God is not a liar -- the historical creation story must be true.

But how does this square with Modern Science’s faith in Darwin’s Theory of Evolution? How does man’s theory prove itself? Though scientists, particularly atheists, continue to proclaim the biblical creation account as a “fairy tale” for ignorant religionists -- it is far from that.

In my mind I had refuted most evolutionary arguments over and against the historical biblical record. The time element was puzzling since even some Christians accept part of Darwinian theory by postulating that God took hundreds of thousands to millions of years to create the Heavens and the Earth.

There are two Bible scriptures frequently quoted to support this theory: “For a thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night ” (Psalms 90:4) and “Do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. ...” (2 Peter 3:8). Yet when read in context, a different conclusion may be reached. (Without going into long explanations, e-mail me for more in-depth answers.)

I had never heard of Dr. Morris or the Institute for Creation Research until I was motivated to seek answers for the irreconciliable questions which plagued me. Dr. Morris’ book, “The Genesis Record” opened my eyes. Studying it placed me on a firm foundation of knowing God is “...not a liar.” There is no better explanation for all of God’s creation than Morris’ detailed breakdown of the Genesis creation account. No more doubts.

There are many other scientists involved in their respective fields of endeavor who are also Christians. They work quietly behind the scenes and “stand in the gap” between evolution‘s philosophical religiosity and God. They’re not sure how to combat the tide of evolutionary belief without substance, the lack of evidence or proof of macro evolution or origins.

Some have accepted the premise that God’s “6 days” of creation are not days but took millions of years. They see no compromise in believing the evolutionary premise that the Earth and universe are much older than what God has said --- His Creation of the heavens and the Earth took “6 days.” Even Jewish Scholars disagree as to what is meant by “day.” I say---context, context, context!

The 21st century finds men of science further deciphering the genetic code of all living things. Though we have been genetically compared to monkeys and chimps, those extra-smart animals, we can also be compared to bananas and daffodils which cannot think or lift a pen much less plant a garden for themselves.

Throughout recorded history, God has chosen servants for a season. Though God has called Dr. Morris home, son John and others continue the refutation of Darwin’s theory and the grip it has over our nation’s society, government and education. Those faithful men of God are “standing in the gap.”

Christians who know and love God must remain firm and unwavering. They must also take their “stand in the gap.”
