Star Wars Vs Star Trek
So which is better, Star Trek or Star Wars. Lets take a look.
Star Wars didn't have anything on tv worth watching until a few years ago when The Clone Wars cartoon ran on Cartoon Network. If you haven't seen these cartoons and your a big Star Wars fan then you need to see them. They tie Episode 2 and 3 together perfectly.
Anyway until The Clone Wars cartoon Star Trek pretty much was the winner in the television department. The original Star Trek wasn't a ratings success but found a home in syndication and produced a huge world wide cult following which prompted Gene Roddenberry to produce another Star Trek series. That plan was scratched after Star Wars came out in 1977. Instead Gene went with the idea of a big budget movie of Star Trek and in 1979 Star Trek The Motion Picture hit theaters.
It didn't fair to well but Gene bounced back with Star Trek 2 The Wrath of Kahn. Star Trek 2 is considered by most as the best Star Trek film of all time.
4 more Star Trek films would follow starring the original crew of the Enterprise until 1991. In 1994 the crew of TNG took over and made 4 feature films. The second of the films made by the TNG crew entitled Star Trek First Contact which featured The Borg as the main threat is considered the best of them. While none of the films were considered blockbusters by today's standards they were successful in their own right.
Meanwhile 3 Star Wars films were made between 1977 and 1983. Then George Lucas who created Star Wars took 16 years off before making the prequels to the first 3 Star Trek films in 1999. All six films did very well at the box office compared to the Star Trek films and two more television shows from Star Wars are in the works. Another cartoon about the Clone Wars is set to debut in 2008 and a live action show in 2009 that will be based around the time between episode 3 and 4.
So which is better? Star Wars and Star Trek have both given us many great shows and movies as well as moments that us fans will never forget. Moments like the first time we saw the Borg on Star Trek TNG or when Anakin Skywalker becomes Darth Vader.
In the end both shows are equally good and it's hard to pick one over the other. My hope is that while George Lucas says he isn't doing anymore Star Wars movies that somewhere down the road a new Star Trek series will be brought to TV. Until then we will all have to wait until Christmas of 2008 for the new Star Trek movie.
