Lies, Lies and More Lies – So what else is new?
The reason why the controversy emerged once again is the indictment of I Lewis Libby, the vice president’s chief of staff for lying to a federal grand jury in the CIA leak case. Obviously Libby’s perjury was aimed at covering up the far more significant lies that had been told by Bush and Cheney in propelling our country into an illegal war with Iraq.
Now the avalanche of lies and propaganda that were fed to Congress and the world from the White House has come back to haunt them. What with now more than 2,050 US soldiers and well over 100,000 Iraqi civilians dead all because the friends of the President were determined to go to war with Iraq years before there ever was the convenient excuse of the 9/11 attacks. Talk about pre-meditated murder. The Bush cabal had this in mind ever since the first Gulf War of the first President Bush.
So what does our President do now but spread more lies! In his Veteran's Day speech while standing in front of a banner that declared “Strategy for Victory” he said, “When I made the decision to remove Saddam Hussein from power, the Congress approved it with strong bipartisan support,” and then he added, “While it’s perfectly legitimate to criticize my decision or the conduct of the war, it is deeply irresponsible to rewrite the history of how the war began. Some Democrats and anti-war critics are now claiming we manipulated intelligence and misled the American people about why we went to war. These critics are fully aware that a bipartisan Senate investigation found no evidence of political pressure to change the intelligence community’s judgments related to Iraq’s weapons programs.”
When previous lies fall apart the administration tries to prop them up with more lies. Neither the Senate investigation into Iraqi WMD intelligence nor the commission appointed by Bush and headed by Judge Laurence Silberman dealt with how the administration “manipulated intelligence and misled the American people,” but only the nature of the intelligence itself. On this score, the Silberman panel concluded that the intelligence was “dead wrong” and constituted one of the “most damaging intelligence failures in American history.” A failure, it should be added, for which no one was ever held accountable, precisely because false intelligence is what the administration wanted.
So my friends when will we, the American people, get fed up with these lies upon lies and get rid of the mess we have in Washington? That’s the sixty-four thousand dollar question!
