Thought For National Interest : America Needs of Redevelopment in Aging Infrastructure
Accidently, the explosion of an underground steam pipe in Manhattan on July 18, 2007 made New Yorkers and the U S government more conscious to think and monitor over the aging infrastructures. The collapse of the Minneapolis freeway bridge killed people and made many passengers injured. It is certainly a wake-up call for New Yorkers. The state’s roads and bridges seem far worse shape than those in Minnesota. For redevelopment billions of dollars are necessary as for investment that the state does not have readily contributed .Every redeveloping project delayed or deferred puts drivers and passengers at risk of life.
As the nationwide study by the Reason Foundation showed New York’s transportation infrastructure the third worst in the country, stating 37 percent of bridges are found ‘structurally deficient’ above the national average of 24 percent.
Addressing the crisis, the US government has to think over it for solution as far as possible. For investment capital, increase in public tax is not appropriate strategy, because the state should not give excess burden of taxation to general public and the livelihood of people must not be harder and costlier. Hence, the best plan and strategy for redevelopment of the infrastructure must go at the hands of public-private sector through the public-private partnerships program.
A lot of investment capital can be accumulated from the private sector in the US for rebuilding roads, bridges, tunnels and sewerages in lieu of development expenditures. In the United States of America, 1 percent of the total populations have had propensity to pay the half of the national budget. It means to say, 1 percent of the total populations are very rich and have a strong economic power to strengthening the national development and to cope with national crisis.
The US government has to call upon those affluent classes of people for national redevelopment .In exchange of development expenditure; the state government should provide the clear provision of a long term lease for operating the roads/bridges to collect tolls on them. In this regard New York state government could call upon the private investors for project proposals setting out design specifications, investment costs, maintenance standards, lease periods, toll rates for years and kinds of bids getting back.
On the other side, New York City sewers do not, it is experienced, properly work. Due to the failure in the drainage system flooding crisis happened over all of the years. To meet 21st century’s need the city sewer system urges to reconstruct in advanced technology at a large volume of expansion. Really, it was a watery nightmare in New York because of heavy rain. Paralyzed the subways and commuter rail lines, hundreds of thousands of people delayed and parboiled underground. Critics commented ‘New York now goes to hell when the heavens open.’ Investing tax money in aging infrastructure is not sexy. As the research study shows, the United States needs $ 1.6 trillion investment capital to cope with the aging infrastructure redevelopment.
Hence, this is the idea set for easy going to the government for plan management to redevelop and remodel the aging infrastructures of New York City at best and strongest possible way without any burden of heavy tax to the people and capital investment to state. This awaited project is tossed at rat-a-tat speed for better understanding and means for redevelopment soon. For peace, happiness and progress of New Yorkers, the government has to timely think and renovate as early as today.
