This Veterans' Day Let's Remember Our Soldiers In Iraq

Robert Paul Reyes
This Friday let's put aside all the fliers advertising Veterans' Day specials, and take a moment or two to remember the two thousand (and counting) American soldiers who have been killed in Iraq.

This war is far away, far from over and usually far from our thoughts, as we confront vexing problems on the homefront.

But Katrina, rising fuel prices, the battle over the direction of the Supreme Court and the corruption festering in the White House, should not relegate the quagmire in Iraq to the back pages of the newspapers and to the back of our minds.

We must remember and commemorate those young men and women who have died in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The power brokers in Washington may have had Machiavellian reasons for invading Iraq, but our brave warriors would say that they are there to bring democracy to an oppressed people.

In a generation or two we may build a memorial to celebrate the sacrifice of Iraq war veterans, but we need to remember our fighting men and women today.

We must pressure the government to make sure that our soldiers are adequately compensated for their service to their country.

But there is also something that each one of us can do this Veteran's Day: Say a prayer, send an email or a care package to our soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.
