Employees of Reno-Area Car Dealership Demand Respect

Tired of being mistreated by management, workers at a car dealership in Sparks, Nevada overwhelmingly voted to join Local 533 in Reno. The workers at Lithia Motors voted September 28 to join the Teamsters. The 10-member unit consists of lot attendants, parts department workers and service department employees.

All 10 workers approached the Teamsters and immediately signed cards for representation. Lithia is the first Reno-area car dealership with unionized employees.

These workers had not received a raise in seven years,” said Mark Tracy, Local 533 Secretary-Treasurer. “They are also tired of being mistreated by management. They have been forced to do work in other departments. For example, an ex-plumber who is now a mechanic was called at home at 10:30 one night and told he had to come in right away to fix a clogged toilet.”

The employees were constantly being threatened with their jobs, and they were being forced to report to work and stay there all day without pay if there was no flat rate work available,” Tracy said.

Tracy has been meeting with the workers to develop the initial contract proposal.
