Teen Girls Should Not Do This
And while all those things are taking place, there are other things some of those teens are also facing.
Such things as fitting in to be with the ‘in crowd,’ wearing the hippest clothes and having the latest gadgets, usually that turns out to be the cellular telephone and being self conscious about their physical appearance.
But while some overly self conscious teen girls are constantly checking themselves for those visible flaws such as pimples, acne, and maybe a bulge here or there, some of those girls resort to extreme measures, such as obsessive weightloss methods in an attempt to rid themselves of the bulge they might find a problem. One of those methods is purging, something that could turn out to do more harm than good in the long run.
According to new research conducted by a team of researchers at the University Of Texas At Austin, some teens who engage in the use of the purging method to rid themselves of unwanted pounds, could end up not only damaging their health, but also gaining more weight.
The research team led by psychologist, Eric Stice, followed 496 girls, who ranged in ages between eleven and fifteen for a period of four years.
These girls were questioned about their eating habits, with follow up visits for the next four years, when it was discovered that teen girls who participated in the study and used the purging method as a way to lose weight, ended up becoming five times more obese during that time.
Apart from this, other factors that place some teen girls at risk are things like erratic eating habits, depression and having an overweight parent.
In addition, purging does not decrease caloric intake. Rather, it slows down the metabolism which makes it more difficult to lose weight in the long run, so what’s a self conscious teen girl to do?
Well and according to Dr. Stice, it is better not to consume more calories than the body requires, for adoloscence obesity can result in serious problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and colorectal cancer.
And with some of the problems some teen girls already face with regard to certain forms of peer pressure, they don’t need any of the above mentioned complications.
One should avoid the excessive use of laxatives, don't indulge in purging and don’t take in more calories than one’s body can handle.
