Silence Is Religion

Victoria Hardy
I remember as a jaded 20 something I made the comment that nothing would ever shock me again, foolish really and the world quickly showed me that it still had plenty of surprises to deliver. I like things to make sense, so as a mellowed 40 something, it seems I am perpetually surprised by the actions of people and today is no different. It seems in Texas, an atheist by the name of David Wallace Croft is suing the school district and Governor Rick Perry for allowing a moment of silence in his children’s elementary school class. Mr. Croft believes that those seconds of silence are unconstitutional and imply state sanctioned school prayer.

It appears Mr. Croft has quite a problem with religion of any sort and spends a lot of his time policing the elementary school his children attend. He has also asked the school board to quit allowing the Boy Scouts to hold recruiting rallies during school, he complained because a teacher wore an Abilene Christian University shirt and was unhappy with a flier sent home announcing a bible study held on school grounds after hours. He was upset when he learned his children were being taught the song Silent Night and pulled his kids from the holiday program. And it appears Mr. Croft has been quite successful in his endeavors, as the rallies and fliers have stopped and the songs for the holiday program have been altered or removed.
