THE POWER OF VISION

Dr. Adalat Khan
THE POWER OF VISION FROM AN ISLAMIC PERSPECTIVE

I am going to start my presentation by taking you back a few hundred years to an era which can be called the darkest age in the history of mankind. The people at that time were involved in self destructive activities like drinking, gambling, womanizing, sorcery, and black magic. They were constantly fighting with one another, even for petty issues they were killing one another. There was total chaos, lawlessness and a lack of discipline. In the midst of this darkness, a boy by the name of Muhammad (S.A.W) is born. When he grows and looks around at the conditions of his people he doesn’t like what they do and keeps away from them. He gets so disgusted with it all, that he will go to a cave called Hira to be alone. It is there one night that while he is in a trance a voice comes and says “Read”. He says “I cannot read”. A third time the voice, more terrible commands “Read !” He says “What can I read?” The voice says “Read : In the name of the Lord who create. Createth man from a clot”. When he wakes up and comes out the same awe inspiring voice says : “O, Muhammad ! Thou are Allah’s messengers, and I am Gabriel”. Muhammad (S.A.W) raises his eyes and sees the angel, in the likeness of a man standing in the sky above the horizon. He stands quite still, turning his face from the vision, but whatever side he turns his face the vision is in front of his eyes. That was the beginning of a vision which Allah bestowed on our holy Prophet. That vision was so powerful that the holy Prophet not only transformed the Arabs but also spread his message all over the world and as a result today Islam is a universal religion spread all over the globe.

It was not an easy task, because the holy Prophet faced enormous difficulties. He was beaten, boycotted, abused, almost killed but despite all the odds he persisted and spread Allah’s religion to the whole world. There are many factors which enabled the holy Prophet to persist and achieve his great mission. Chief among them are Allah’s support, his belief in the truth and the mission delegated to him by Allah. One of the factors which is relevant to today’s topic is The Power of Vision he had for the future of his people in particular and humanity in general.

He foresaw the birth of a new civilization where people would follow one God, respect one another and lead a decent and peaceful life. And that vision bestowed by Allah on him enabled him to complete his mission. In this presentation I will be talking about “The meaning of vision, why we need to have a vision, How to acquire a vision, and the key criteria for a vision from an Islamic perspective”.

The Meaning Of Vision :

We have heard a lot about vision, but very few people know its true meaning. “It means the ability to foresee the future very clearly as you want it to be and take action towards its achievement” Everyone has dreams but very few have a vision about their future. Those who have no vision are the people with no sense of direction. As Muslims we should have a vision for our lives, both for this world and the hereafter. And to realise that vision we must take actions towards its achievement.

The Benefits Of Vision :

Why do we need to have a vision ? There are many benefits of having a vision, chief among them are :

1. A Sense Of Direction

A Vision provides us with a sense of direction so that we know where we want to go. This enable us to focus our attention on our vision and persist despite difficulties and problems. If we don’t know what we want from life, we will have no purpose and will wander aimlessly. God has provided clear guidelines and goals in The Quran for Muslims to work under them. Muslims have clear goals to achieve in both of the worlds. For Akhirat, our vision is to go to heaven and avoid hell. In this world too we should become the best in whatever we do. If we are bankers we should have the vision to become one of the best bankers, if we are managers we should become the best managers. In Short whatever we do we should believe and aim to achieve excellence. And we cannot achieve excellence if we don’t have vision. As such vision help us to reach the goals which we choose to achieve.

2. Vision Provides Hope

One of the main ingredient to achieve success in life is hope. And to hope you should have something to hope for ! That something is called a vision, which gives ordinary people the hope to become extra ordinary persons. Vision provides hope for people to look up to the future. This enable them to face difficulties, work hard and strive for achieving that vision. People who have no vision of their future lack hope. And those who lack hope indulge in self destroying habits like resorting to drugs, cheating, stealing and other bad habits. Vision provide us with the hope to live and happily spend our lives. Visions remind us that after every dark night, there will be a bright morning and after every difficulty there will be happiness.

3. Leads To Motivation

A Vision provides the fuel of enthusiasm to keep people motivated. People with vision are highly motivated because they have their eyes fixed at the milestone, not stones on the road. Difficulties, frustrations, disappointments, may come in the way, but if you know your ultimate destination, these factors will not discourage you. A Vision also help you to motivate others. Suppose you are a manager in a bank, and have a vision which you share with your subordinates it will gear them to work harder. In essence a vision is useful for self motivation and for motivating others.

4. Vision Leads To the strength Of Character

People with a vision have their eyes focused on long term noble goals and refuse to get tempted by short term temptation. They are guided by their vision, take the right steps and become morally strong. Contrarily, those who have no vision, lack moral strength. It will be appropriate to mention here about an incident about the Quraish , who opposed the holy Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W). When they failed to stop the Holy Prophet from spreading Islam through other means, they finaly resorted to a different strategy to convince Him to give up his struggle, uder the leadership of Utba Bin Rabia. They went to the holy Prophet and tried to bribe him with different alternatives to choose from. Among them

1. Offering Him to become the chief

2. Tempting Him to become their king

3. and finally promising to make him the wealthiest man among them.

After listening to their offers the Holy prophet read verses from the Holy Quran and rejected their offer. Being Muslims we should follow the character and values of the Holy prophet and that will only come if we have a positive vision.

5. A Vision Delivers Excellent Results

Sometimes very ordinary people dream of big dreams and realise them. They start from zero base and reach the highest level of achievement and excellence. Let me share with you a true story of one such person by the name of Sattar Eidi in Pakistan. Sattar Eidi was a hospital attendant in a government hospital. He was so inspired by the Islamic teachings of helping others especially patients, that even after office hours he would remain in the hospital and help the poor . He would even buy medicine from his own pocket for poor people who could not afford to. Almost every month he would spend most of his income and time on others. During that time he would always dream of establishing an organisation which would help the poor, the sick, the distressed and the deserted. Remaining in the service was stopping him from achieving his vision, so he resigned from his job. Everyone discouraged him from resigning, and told him he would be able to do nothing as he was poor but he was not deterred. Inspired by his vision to serve the needy he started an organisation by the name of the Eidi Foundation. It will take hours to explain how many difficulties he forced at the beginning but today the Eidi Foundation runs hundreds of welfare homes and hospitals, operates thousands of Ambulances and even a helicopters service for rescuing people and airlifting them to hospitals. He has expanded his operations to other countries. Today the Eidi Foundation collects millions of dollars of donation and helps thousands of people in Pakistan and other countries.

The story of Sattar Eidi illustrates the point that people with a vision overcome the limiting circumstances and achieve the hights of excellence which may be really surprising.

These and many more benefits make it mandatory for everyone to have a vision. There are many ways which can help you acquire one. The following are some of the ways which will enable you to figure out your own vision

1. Self and Situation Analysis

The greatest knowledge is self knowledge and the greatest tragedy is the fact that many people don’t know themselves. To determine your vision you need to ask few basic questions from yourself. These are :

1. Who am I ?

2. What is my purpose in life ?

3. What do I want from life ?

4. Why do I want it ?

5. How to get it ?

To support these questions let us understand that God has created human being as his representative on this earth - what is called “Ashraful Makhluqat”. This status and position itself should empower you to become the best in whatever you do. Look inside and answer the questions I mentioned. You will figure your vision by answering these questions. Additionally you should look around and search for better opportunities. It is sad to note that many Muslims think they shouldn’t have grand plans in this life. I must say that we should have grander plans as compared to people of other religions, otherwise we will be a dead faith. If you look at the Muslims of today and the Muslims of the 15th century there is a big difference. The Muslims of the 15th century were at the top in whatever they were doing. They were the best politicians ruling almost half the world ; There were best doctors, Scientists, Philosophers, artists, educationists, financial administrators. In fact they were the best in all professions at that time when the West was living in the dark age. Today Muslims are humiliated, suffering and bullied every where. For Muslims to survive and lead they should have a great vision of their future.

2. Follow The Quran And Great Ideals :

The Quran is the Greatest Book which can guide us about our vision. It is a complete code of life and its teachings should guide our vision. After the Quran, the greatest example in front of us is the Holy prophet Muhammad (S.A.W). If we look at him he was a Great politician, a Great speaker, a Successful Business man and a Perfect human being. We should follow his teachings and use his personality as an example work out our own vision . There are other great personalities in the Muslim World whose live and success stories can help us in the same way. In Malaysia our Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Dr. Mahathir is a good example to follow. A few years ago, internationally, Malaysia was almost unknown. But today Malaysia is a leading Muslim country nearing the status of a developed nation. We should look at these example and try to become like them, and that will help us establish our vision.

3. Acquire More Knowledge

The old proverb “Knowledge is Power” holds true. Islam also teaches us to continuously increase our knowledge. One of the sayings of the holy Prophet says “Acquire knowledge even if you have to go to China”. Why is it necessary to acquire knowledge ? The reason for acquiring more knowledge is that knowledge broaden our thoughts and mental outlook. With more knowledge we things better. Knowledge can be achieved everywhere. We are living in an information age and information is easily and freely available. TV, Radio, the newspapers and books are full of very useful information. Additionally there are many opportunities to acquire formal education even on part time basis. If you don’t have more knowledge than the other person you are preparing for your own failure. By acquiring more knowledge, you will get a better view of yourself, the world and be able to articulate your vision.

4. Relate With Successful People

Finally, one of the ways to acquire a better vision is to make friendship with good and successful people. When you join the company of good and successful people they will positively influence you to reach for higher goals. On the other hand if your friends consists of negative, bad and toxic people you will also become like one of them. When you meet successful people ask them questions, Why they are successful ? and this will enable you to become a person of high vision.

Now I will focus on the final aspect of vision, that is the criteria for a vision from Islamic perspective. That is what should be the general characteristic of a Muslim’s vision. These in my opinion are :

1. Positive And Right

A Muslim should have a positive vision and that vision must be the right one from an Islamic perspective. Positive means a vision which is aimed at positive results like the highest education, reaching the top of a career, helping human beings etc. Contrarily a negative vision would be something like harming others, cheating and achieving something at the cost of others. The right vision from Islamic perspective means two things. Firstly, your vision should be in line with your duties towards Allah as a Muslim. Secondly, your vision should not violate the rights of other Muslims and fellow human beings. These two criteria should guide Muslims while forming vision for themselves.

2. Inspiring And Challenging

A Muslim’s vision should be a vision which pushes him to the limits of his potential. A best Momin or true Muslim, a leading manager, an ideal son, father, husband, brother etc. are some of the examples. A Vision which is challenging is also worth the effort and struggle. This will inspire a person to do his or her best and become the best. As Muslims we should aim at the best and top positions and not the second best or second top. In the business world today the criteria for excellence is no more first in class but Best in Class. What does these two words mean. First in class means for example Maybank becoming the best bank in Malaysia. But Best in Class means Maybank becoming the best product and service provider not in banking alone, but other industries like hotels, manufacturing etc also look at Maybank as the best example to follow. For individuals Best in Class meaning becoming no 1. performer not in their professions alone but others too.

3. Clear And Elaborate

A vision should be clear, detailed and elaborate. It has got to be a vision which you articulate clearly with minute details. You can’t have a blur and uncertain vision. An unclear and blur vision will relay confusing signals to your mind, which will not motivate you to achieve what you envision. A classic example of a Clear and Elaborate vision is “Vision 2020”. Vision 2020 is an elaborate vision, preparing Malaysia to become a developed country by the year 2020. This reminds us the need for determining the timing for achieving the vision. The clarity of vision is like the clarity of your target. If your target is not clear you will not hit it. In view a good vision should be clear, elaborate and detailed.

4. Backed Up With Actions

A vision without actions is just a dream, desire or blur idea but not a vision. Whatever we want to achieve we must work for it. The holy Quran specifically says “That man will have, what he strives for”. After determining your vision we should take the necessary actions for making it happen. Actions speak louder and actions differentiate winners from losers. Winners take massive actions to reach their goals while losers have grand plans but don’t take actions. In this competitive age working smart is not enough. One should work both smart as well as hard.

5. Seek Allah’s Help

Finally and the most important criteria for a Muslim’s vision should be seeking help from Allah. The greatest gift provided to Muslims is the power of prayers. Prayers connect us to the Mighty Power who has all the power to make anything, everything and impossible things happen. Time and again God has graciously reminded us to seek his support in whatever we embark on. We should always seek Allah’s blessings in our wordly as well as Akhirat affairs. Prayers will back up our vision with the mighty force of Allah’s blessings and make it happen.

Ladies and gentlemen, I will like to conclude this presentation by reemphasizing the importance of vision. Vision is the hall mark of success, achievement and glory. As Muslims we should have visions for our future both in this world and the hereafter. Understanding the true meaning of vision and articulating a clear vision for our lives will give us a sense of direction. Keeping in view the key criteria for a positive vision will guide our actions and this will lead us to the zenith of achievements. This reminds me to ask you, Do you have a vision ? If none it is high time to have one.

Thank You and Wassallam.
