SUCCESS PRINCIPLES FOR EVERY ONE AND ALL TIMES

Every one wants success and every one can become successful. However the majority of people are not successful. Almost 97% of the people can be categorised as ordinary people and they qualify to be called "Unsuccessful". So actually only 3 out of hundred people are successful. Ironically the 97% want struggle and intensely desire to become successful but never succeed. Moreover it is also strange that these same people possess the same talent, capabilities, and potential but still find it hard to join the rank of those who have succeeded. What is then a secret of a small percentage of people who succeed, become rich, achieve fame and popularity, live a happy and fulfilling life and become the envy of everyone while a vast majority of people remain unsuccessful. There is an answer and a definite answer. The secret which makes this difference between winners and losers, extraordinary and ordinary, famous and unknown, is that the first category of people practice certain timeless success principles which the second category of people do not possess.

These success principles can be rightly called "The success principles for everyone and all times". When we say everyone it means that everyone by following these principles can achieve success in whatever field they are. It does not matter whether a person is running a business, working, involved in politics or engaged in any other field. What really mattes is whether or not that person understand and follow these golden principles. By following these principles anyone can succeed in their own selected fields. Essentially these principles have the following characteristics:

1. All great personalities like prophets, political leaders, conquerors, emperors, entrepreneurs, scientists, artists and writers commonly practised some or all of these principles.

2. These principles are timeless meaning that it has worked in the past, is working today and will continue to be relevant in the future.

3. These principles can be learned by anyone and with their help anyone would be able to achieve success.

The 10 success principles which make up for the profile of greatness and excellence are:

1. Faith and Belief.

2. Mission and vision.

3. Commitment and persistence.

4. Superior communication skills.

5. Courage and determination.

6. Patience and endurance.

7. Justice and equality.

8. Universal love.

9. Honesty and truthfulness.

10. Wisdom.

1- FAITH AND BELIEF:

A religious missionary went to a far flung mountainous area for preaching. There he met a shepherd who was grazing his sheeps. During their conversation the priest found out that the shepherd had no religion and did not believe in God. The preacher started preaching his religion and tried to convince him. He also handed over a holy book to the shepherd who refused it saying that he could not read ad write. The shepherd was also not in interested in what the missionary was trying to tell him. After a lot of persuasion from the missionary the shepherd asked him. How can the things you are asking me to believe help me? It can do anything for you! replied the preacher. Are you sure it can do anything? Asked the shepherd surprisingly. Yes I am sure just try and see, replied the priest. If that is the case then tell me what is the one thing I should start remembering from your book, asked the shepherd. God! Replied the missionary. O.K I will see what this God can do for me, replied the shepherd.

After one year the preacher went to visit the shepherd and was pleasantly surprised that by seeing him from the far the shepherd left his sheeps running towards greeted him running towards him warmly. The preacher asked how is everything? Wonderful!!! you are indeed a true and good person because the word you taught me can do everything for me- Let us go to my house so that we can discuss- the shepherd invited the priest to his house. On the way to the house they came across a river. The river was very deep and running very fast. The shepherd asked the preacher to jump and swim. The preacher apologised by saying he couldn’t swim. The shepherd told the preacher that he also couldn’t swim and used to take a long route by crossing the bridge but now with the help of the word he had taught him he could cross the bridge like a fish. Suddenly the shepherd jumped to the river and crossed the river to the other side. From the other side he started shouting to the shepherd to jump to and swim but the missionary did not try. Seeing the priest standing there the shepherd again jumped and came back to this side of the river. He asked the priest why he was not swimming. The priest informed him that as he didn’t know how to swim he was scared. The shepherd was surprised and told the preacher that by reciting only one world he could swim but why was the preacher refusing when he could recite the whole book and again persuaded him to start swimming. But the preacher did not listen to him. Out of frustration the shepherd pushed the missionary to the river. The preacher started struggling and after a while he was almost going to drown. He shouted and pleaded the shepherd to save him. The shepherd loudly said ‘God’, jumped into the river and saved away the priest to the other side. This story has one clear message - The power of belief and the dangers of disbelief. The preacher could understand and recite the whole book but he did not believe it. While the shepherd just knew one word but by whole heartedly believing in that single world he could achieve his objective.

This morale bring us to the first principle of leadership that is belief. Belief is the ability of a person to get convinced about the existence or non-existence of certain power, things, or ideas. The person with the belief may not necessarily be able to see the things with his/her naked eyes but he/she is whole heartedly convinced about their existence. All Great leaders commonly possess the quality of believing in someone or something bigger than themselves. Leaders who achieved the most difficult, impossible and almost un-attainable tasks had absolute belief and faith in the things they wanted to achieve.

Faith and belief sow the seeds of success and victory, doubt and suspicion on the other hand cultivate failure and defeat. History is full of thousands and thousands of examples of people who achieved miraculous results with the help of absolute belief and faith. Great achievers are great believers. Discovering the secret of flight, reaching for the stars, and achieving success in any other area of human endeavour is the direct result of people’s strong faith and belief.

2. Mission and Vision:-

The greatness of people is determined by the greatness of their purpose which guide their thoughts, feelings, and actions. It is not people’s physique or looks, it is not their heritage and it definitely not is wealth, knowledge or any other quality which make them tick- it is their personal mission which help them stand out taller from the crowd. Mission may be defined as a higher purpose of people directed towards the achievement of noble goals with the view of helping others and ourselves. Great people, successful people, excellent people and extra-ordinary people searched, figured out, determined and relentlessly pursued their missions till they succeeded to achieved them. Missions have many forms and depending on people’s beliefs and desires they set their own distinct missions. It could be in the form of bringing a positive change in people’s lives - like the one pursued and achieved by great social reformers like Prophet Muhammad, Buddha, Jesus, Confucius. They shattered, changed, and replace negative paradigms and gave humanity a new sense life. Other examples of mission are service to humanity, achieving freedom for people, producing cheaper and better products for the benefits of everyone or contributing to humanity and oneself in any other manner. Closely related to mission is vision which enable people to translate their missions in physical forms. Vision is the ability to foresee things and make them happen in order to achieve our mission. Mission determines the rightness, purpose and philosophy of our actions while vision translate a mission to a tangible reality. For a person to succeed he or she should have a personal mission and a compelling vision of achieving great results in life.

3. Commitment and Persistence:

People who have achieved anything of great significance have done it only after they have committed whole heartedly to it. Commitment may be defined as a quality of people who in order to achieve something, are willing to give any sacrifice and do whatever it takes to achieve that thing. A related quality for commitment is persistence which means staying put despite failures and disappointments. Commitment is the key to success because committed people don't easily give up and exhaust all means for the achievement of their goals and objectives. The majority of people fail because when they start something and face slight problem they give it up. Winners, people who make things happen are those who remain committed and show persistence despite all the odds.

Timur (Tamerlane) one of the greatest emperors whose dynasty Mogul ruled for hundred years is one classic example of persistence. In order to win he fought many battles with his enemies but every time he was defeated. The last time he was badly wounded in his right leg and arm which left him lame for the rest of his life. This time he gave up hope, ran away and hid in a cave. In the cave he saw an ant which was climbing the cave and carrying some food. The ant was continuously falling down but never gave up and continued to climb the cave each time it fell down. Timur counted and noted that the ant fell down almost hundred times and picked itself and ultimately climbed and carried up the food. The ant taught Timur a lesson of commitment and persistence. He came out of the cave organised his army and once again attacked his enemies and succeeded. He succeeded because he learned a lesson from the ant that persistence pays in the long run. This success story and many other like this point out to the fact that in order to achieve any worthy goal one has to be totally committed and persistent.

4. Superior Communication Skills:-

The quality of our lives depends on the quality of our communication skills. Everyone, anywhere and all the times either communicate with themselves or others. Our success to a greater extent will be determined by our success in communicating our ideas to ourselves and others. In a survey conducted by one of the top ten executive search firms in USA for executive making more than US 250,000 a year, the executive were asked to rank the factors to which they attributed for having made it to the big time. The number one factor identified and which they attributed towards their success was their communication skills. Whether it is convincing masses to get united and achieve freedom, transforming nations or organisations, communication and rather superior communication skills will be one of the key factors contributing to our success.

5. Courage and Determination:

Courage and determination is yet another weapon which is commonly possessed by winners. Courage means confronting our fears and taking risks in order to achieve our goals. Courage is the fuel which energise us to come out of our security and comfort zone in search of opportunities and venture out into risky areas. Life is full of risks which if confronted and turned into opportunities can propel people to fame and fortune. Starting a business poses the risk of making losses, taking admission in a course exposes us to flunking , leading others exposes us to ridicule and censure from others but if we do not take the risk we will remain obscure and ordinary persons. Genghis Khan, the greatest Mongol conqueror will always be remembered as one of the greatest conquerors in the history of mankind. Irrespective of whether he was right or wrong one lesson which everyone could learn from him is the awesome power of courage and determination. Born in 1162 as a son of a small chieftain, his father got killed by his enemies when Genghis Khan was only nine years old and out of fear his father’s followers defected to the enemies leaving him and his family as outcasts. Not only that but rival tribe captured him and to prevent him from escaping they put a wooden collar around his neck. By dint of his courage he managed to escape from his captors and ventured out to conquer the world. The Mongol empire conquered by Genghis Khan and later extended by his successors is the largest land empire in all of history. Their domains included China, Russia, Central Asia, Persia and most of the Southwest Asia. It was and till today is the largest contiguous land empire in the world history. From extreme helplessness Genghis Khan rose and became the most powerful man in the world because he had the courage to take risks and the determination to achieve his goals. Courage and determination which differentiate them from losers and people who can be rightly called "Ordinary" persons.

6. Patience and endurance:-

In good times everyone can survive and remain sane but the real test of human greatness is the ability to survive under extremely difficult conditions and circumstances. Patience is one of the greatest qualities which enable people to remain intact under the most adverse and intolerable circumstances. Ordinary people when faced by problems and difficulties give up hope and break down. . Some even commit suicide because they can not cope with difficulties. It is common to hear and read the stories of people who commit suicide due to reasons like losing money in the stock markets, failing in examination or losing a loved one to someone else. On the other hand we also hear and read the stories of great people who endure great difficulties and face enormous tortures in their lives but patiently endure them, till such time they achieve their goals. Nelson Mandela, the president of South Africa spent 27 years in jail and stood horrible physical and mental torture from his white captors. Today we give his example as a successful person because he had the patience and endurance for difficult times. Patience and endurance is thus a virtue which brings success and victory to those who possess and practice it.

7. Justice and equality:-

Great people who command the respect and love of everyone are the one who practice justice and equality. Justice is treating people fairly based on their deeds and treating them equally without any bias for their creed, religion, race or nationality. A just person rewards those who contribute without being negatively influenced by the above mentioned factors . Equality means the feelings that all human beings in the eyes of God are equal and deserve respect and dignity like any other person. Prophet Muhammad is one of the greatest example of justice and equality. Once during a journey he and his friends halted for food. His friends apportioned work among themselves for preparing food and asked him to take rest. The Prophet took upon himself the task of collecting firewood and declined his companions, request to take rest by say that "I do not attribute any distinction to myself. God does not like the man who considers himself superior to his fellow humanbeings". This is one of the examples of equality practised by the Great Prophet. In essence justice and equality earns a person credibility and respect which is highly required specially by those who want to lead others.

8. Universal Love:-

Universal love and respect for everyone without discrimination is another quality shared by great people. Great people win the hearts of people not through fear and manipulation but with true love and respect for everyone. Love is contagious and if you love someone others will respond and reciprocate your love. Love and care for fellow human beings, our relatives, employees and customers will get us their love and those who love us will be willing to give us whatever we want from them. Universal love can be practised by developing high performance teams, sharing knowledge and experience with others and the true desire to develop others till they reach their potential. One of the greatest deeds will be to train, educate and inspire ordinary people to achieve extra ordinary results.

9. Honesty and Truthfulness:-

Honesty even today is still the best policy though sadly, the majority of people mistakenly think that in order to succeed in life, career or business a person has to be sneaky and dishonest. Granted that in the short run one will manage to succeed with dishonest and wrong means but in the long run a dishonest person faces failure and disgrace. If all of us ask ourselves whom would we prefer- an honest or dishonest person? I am sure the answer will be the honest one! People with reputation of honesty and truthfulness always succeed because other people trust them. Honest businessman, managers, leaders, customers, suppliers are preferred to those that are dishonest.

Barry Posner, professor of organisational behaviour at Santa clara University has been asking managers for the last ten years what qualities they admire in CEOs. Amazingly he found that regardless of country, geographical region or type of organisation - the most important attribute at the top was "Honesty". The old saying that "Honesty is the best policy" still holds water. Those who want to succeed and become winners in real sense must practise honesty and truthfulness which indeed will take them there.

10. Wisdom:-

Wisdom means the right use of our intelligence for the achievement of our goals and objectives. According to Peter drucker the famous management guru wisdom means "doing the right things instead of doing things right". Wisdom is the combination of intelligence, common sense, sharpness, and sensitivity. Wisdom also means knowing the right ways of doing things and effectively dealing with people. People who have this quality are well organised, productive, results oriented, excellent in managing human relationship and good managers of their time, resources and people working for them. Wisdom is the key quality which enable people to see things in a right perspective and enable them to achieve excellent results.

Conclusion:-

Success is the most enchanting word for everyone's ears but alas achieved by very few. The fault does not lie in people because each person is born with the greatest potential of succeeding but in the fact that very few people understand the principles which lead to success. The 10 success principles presented is a profile of Greatness commonly possessed by great people of all times. These principles and qualities have existed in people since thousands of years and still exist in people who have earned the right to be called "Great People". Whether they were leaders or conqueror, entrepreneurs or managers, social workers or change makers all of them undoubtedly possessed all or some of these qualities. If these principles have earned riches, fame and fortunes for others by following them we too can become like them or even better than them and earn our birth right- the right to succeed and become excellent in our designated fields.
