As of Press Time: Mudbugs are (4-0) and 1 Shootout loss.
Fall brings lots of things, Notre Dame Football, the end of Major League Baseball, the start of the NBA, thankfully this year the NHL, and Fall also marks the start of the CHL season.
The Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs who are the minor league affiliate of the Buffalo Sabers are starting the season with a taste of needing vengeance, after being knocked out of the 2005 playoffs in the 1st round by the Wichita Thunder (4-3). On paper, this year, the Mudbugs look poised for a great run as the trio of 2nd year player Brett Smith, Chris Brassard, and Dan Wildfong returns.
Only being in his 2nd year, Smith really feels good about the “BCD Trio.” “We all know our jobs that have to be done. We each have the ability to get the job done on defense and offense. It starts with goaltending and we have a great between the pipes. We want a (W) and 2 points in standing.” Trio member Brassard commented saying, “All three of us do whatever it takes to get the (W). Smitty has speed, Dan is the fast shooter and skater and I’m a shooter.”
As with any team sport, chemistry and family are huge. “You win championships on the road. Riding 16 hours in a bus to Colorado, you form bonds with the other 18 guys. Those bonds show you how strong your team will be,” said Brassard.
If you look at the roster, you’ll find that all except one player Jason Basile is from Canada with most of the roster being from Ontario. “Basile and I actually played at Ferris State (CCHA). We have a family atmosphere, whether or not its because most of us are from Ontario, I don’t know. But Muscutt comes in and really provides a family atmosphere,” Smith told me. “Family is huge down here with the Mudbugs, everyone from the owners, the trainers, the players wives and girlfriends and children. Everyone is supportive and it makes for a great franchise,” added Brassard.
The Mudbugs during the off-season didn’t only take charge of their own team, but they also helped out with the community, making use of the Century Tel Center, “We actually had people living in the arena up until the day they laid the ice down, and there was actually talk of us starting with a bunch of road games,” said Smith, about the hurricane relief support. Mudbugs players also help in the local community by spending their free-time with local school children and doing walks for such things as diabetes. Year around the fans also show the support to the players and franchise and it doesn’t go unnoticed by players, “We tell them all the time, but we have huge fan support and appreciate the 7,000 fans per home game that come out to see us,” said Smith.”
Smith also commented on how it will feel to end the season against a team like Austin at home, “Ending the season at home is great, playing at home provides momentum going forward into the playoffs.”
When your in any kind of minor league system, you track the majors, and it’s no different for CHL players with most having their picks for who they want to see win the Stanley Cup, “Toronto will win the cup,” said Brassard! (*Writer’s note: Sorry Chris I think it will be Calgary or Ottawa).
Side Notes:
Shoot and Pass with Brett Smith.
(S) = Agree and (P) = Disagree
S = I will score 30 + goals this season.
S = The Mudbugs will win 80% of their games this season.
Brassard shot on both of these saying Smith will have 30+ goals and Mudbugs will win 80% of their games.
