Actress Rebecca Schaeffer's Killer Brutally Stabbed In Prison
Robert John Bardo, 37, was the recipient of 11 stab and puncture wounds. After the attack Bardo was transported to UC Davis Medical Center for treatment before being declared in stable condition and returned to prison.
The primary suspect in the attack was identified as a 42-year-old inmate serving an 82-years-to-life sentence for murder in the second degree. Two inmate fashioned weapons were recovered from the scene, a yard in which inmates walk to and from the chow hall. The attack is said to have occurred around 6:20 AM as the inmates were on their way to breakfast.
Before the attack occured, Bardo was serving a life sentence in a maximum security unit for special needs inmates, including convicted gang members, sex offenders, and other notorious prisoners. He is expected to resume his sentence there.
Bardo had stalked actress Rebecca Schaeffer for several years after obtaining her address from the Department of Motor Vehicles through a private investigator. Schaeffer had been a former teen model and actress in the 1980’s television sitcom ‘My Sister Sam’.
The 19-year-old Bardo had become obsessed to the point of writing letters and attempting to visit Schaeffer. He shot the actress on July 18, 1989 in Los Angeles as she answered her door. Bardo was charged with the murder, and sentenced in 1991 to life without the possibility of parole. Schaeffer’s death played a role in creating anti-stalking laws.
At this time officials are still unclear on the motive behind Bardo’s stabbing, and whether his notoriety was a factor in the attack.
