Old Fashioned Letter Writing, Is It Losing Its Touch?

Judy Ramsook
Communication, it?s the one tool that can bring people together or a lack of it can set them apart.

It?s the reason some among us may want to learn a new language, express an interest in spending more time with some one he/she just met or say a simple hello to some one. And with the birth of the computer age, now there are faster and more innovative ways to communicate more than ever.

There is that one item no one who happens to possess one would like to leave home without, the cellular telephone.

Along with that, there is text messaging, and with the computer/internet age, there are emails and instant messaging. Communicating has never been faster.

And while those who use this type of technology to get that all important message across state lines and border lines in a matter of seconds or minutes, there is one form of communication that may be losing the battle. What is that? The now archaic form of letter writing.

It was the one thing people who had some one with whom to communicate prior to the computer age took great pride in.

They would set aside a special part of the day to collect their thoughts, purchase special personalized stationery or create their own unique designs with matching envelopes and fancy art work and also choose a pen with which one felt comfortable enough. And this form of communicating enhanced one?s penmanship too.

For if the person writing the letter wanted to be fully and effectively understood, he/she would also take the time to handwrite those letters properly. So that the lower case letter a, for example would not be confused for the letter e in a certain word. And it also improved one?s spelling ability as well.

In an age prior to the MS Word spellcheck feature, letter writing could have been a real time consuming effort.

The letter writer had his/her paper, pen, dictionary, as opposed to just clicking on the spell check feature on the computer and relying on his/her fast typing ability.

Of course some people who still want to give that personal touch to his/her bit of communication still frequent the stationery section of the store, but letter writing should not be forgotten.

For, before the invention of the telephone, there was word of mouth, something that will always be around, and there was also letter writing.

It was the one thing that made some look forward to having the mail delivered or picked up. And today, with innovative, computer technology one can find that same level of excitement even faster by checking his/her email.
