Star Trek Actor George Takei (Sulu) Is Gay

Robert Paul Reyes
George Takei, who as helmsman Sulu steered the Starship Enterprise, has veered into uncharted territory, coming out as a homosexual in a Gay publication.

Takei joined the stellar "Star Trek" cast in 1966 as Hikaru Sulu; he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1986.

The 68-year old thespian said he and his partner have been together for 18 years, that's a lot longer than the three year run of Star Trek.

I'm just glad that the aging actor finally felt free enough to come out, it would have been a shame if the fearless space explorer had died cowering in the closet.

Perhaps it's a sign of progress that Takei's revelation did not cause much of a buzz -- if he had come out as a Klingon that would have been a different story.

But it will be a more significant sign of progress if the next "Star Trek" movie has an openly homosexual character.
