Why I am so disturbed about this illegal, immoral war in Iraq!

Earl J. Prignitz
To start at the beginning it was a war without any real reason. It was a trumped up reason from day one. Even the CIA has finally admitted that there were no WMD’s and that was the main reason given for sending our young men and women half way around the world in the first place, and spending billions of dollars unnecessarily

Then we were told “Well we got rid of that pesky old dictator Saddam Hussein anyway and that was good for all “Free nations”. But is that why we should go to war spending billions of dollars and sacrificing thousands of our young? I don’t think so and it just boggles my mind to try and understand how my country could re-elect the man who made such irrational decisions in the first place.

Then in his acceptance speech his real desire for world domination surfaced. He seems to have the power and the will to decide who is good and who is evil, who will live and who will die, what form of government will be able to exist in every nation.

If he isn’t satisfied with any government he will liberate it’s people and impose what we call “democracy” on it. George W. Bush, it seems, wants to be the ruler of the world. He wants to be more powerful than the United Nations, more powerful than the countries of Europe, even more powerful than Congress and the people of the United States. It doesn’t matter that at this point in time the majority of the people are beginning to see that invading Iraq was a bad idea. That doesn’t bother George. He probably has his sights set on Iran or Venezuela at this moment!

And if you will reminisce just a bit you will remember this war was all based on “FEAR”. It was fear of the terrorists that George kept telling us about. We were going to root out “terrorists” wherever they tried to hid. Now we are discovering that we are creating more terrorists than we can possibly remove. I know what you are thinking about here. You are saying that Earl guy just has an obsession against war. And you know what? You are right!

I am terribly disturbed about the war because of what war really is, and because of what it is doing to my country! Families are being disrupted for what? For big George’s ego! Men and women sacrificing years away from family and friends. Many sacrificing their lives and countless more losing parts of their bodies, others returning with mental problems for the rest of their lifetime And when you’ve sacrificed your life, it no longer matters whether Iraq is "liberated" or oppressed, because you don’t exist any more. I saw a mother being hand-cuffed and being led away just last night on Wolf Blitzer’s news on CNN just because she was telling a group of people that George W. Bush had killed her son. What do you think about that? How do you like that for freedom to express oneself?

George Bush can speak cavalierly about such sacrifices. He can say "freedom is always worth it." He can speak with gratitude about such sacrifices – because he is making no sacrifice whatsoever. He can tell young people that when you die "you will add not just to the wealth of our country, but to its character."

However George Bush can’t return a dead son. to his mother. He can’t return a dead husband. to his bereaved widow. He can’t bring a dead soldier back to raise his children. He can’t do anything to restore what he has stolen from people with his glib assurances about WMDs, about freedom always being worth the price – a price that to him is effectively nil.

The dead are dead, and they can’t come back. They won’t dance at any inaugural balls – or even attend their alumni reunions. They won’t attend presidential banquets – or even eat at the local coffee shop. Not ever again. They are dead. and George Bush killed them. He killed them as certainly as though he personally had fired a rocket launcher at their homes.

What right did he have to “liberate” people who hadn’t even asked to be liberated, to bring democracy to a people who hadn’t asked for democracy? Only a man who has no links to the real world would start a war that destroys lives and other peoples families and then dare to proclaim “Every man and woman on this earth has rights, and dignity, and matchless value, because they bear the image of their Maker.”

So I ask you “What kind of a President do we have? And what has he given us other than wars, fear, and a state of siege? Yes I am very disturbed with George W Bush and his war mongering and I will continue to cry out against it! I am very troubled with every death that occurs, whether it be an American or an Iraqi, because each and every death is more than a statistic. The dead in Iraq, totaling over a hundred thousand, are blood on their hands. The bloody violence is a monster they created. The death, dismemberment, and trauma that U.S. soldiers undergo is this administration's legacy to military families. This is the visceral cutting edge of resistance to this warmaking, and we should voice it at every opportunity. Call it exactly what it is, I say it is MURDER!

And I for one cannot forget who started all of this killing. A small group in Washington who believe they were put there by God to remake the world as they want it.
