Blog Accuses Military Of Creating Serial Killers

Frank Brooks
The blog world seems to be reeling from a recent article that claims the United States Military is to blame for creating serial killers and mass murderers. “In Cold Blog” which the authors describe as “A True Crime Compendium From the Leading Voices in the Genre” makes a nearly 1400-word accusation against the military for the transformation of soldiers into psychotic killers.

The author sites names such as Charles Whitman, Jeffrey Dahmer, and Timothy Mcveigh as examples of how a truly “army of one” is created as far as deadly killers are concerned. Also cited is the July 30, 2007 issue of The Nation magazine which features pictures of an American Soldier holding a spoon and simulating the act of eating a dead Iraqi’s brains, as well the soldier’s take on the situation:

"Take a picture of me and this (expletive deleted)," a soldier who had been in Sergeant Mejía's squad said as he put his arm around the corpse. Sergeant Mejía recalls that the shroud covering the body fell away, revealing that the young man was wearing only his pants. There was a bullet hole in his chest.

"Damn, they really (expletive deleted) up, didn't they?" the soldier laughed.

The author suggests that the methods in which the military trains is to blame for the acts committed by soldiers and ex-servicemen. He references this opinion by using CPT Pete Kilner’s thesis “Military Leaders’ Obligation to Justify Killing in War” which essentially states that "the methods that the military currently uses to train and execute combat operations enable soldiers to kill the enemy effectively, but they leave the soldiers liable to post-combat psychological trauma caused by guilt."

The blog article drones on and on in an attempt to drive home the message that “The newest crop of Charles Whitmans and Jeffrey Dahmers should be prowling our streets any day now -- and for many years to come.”

The blog article, titled "Killitary: How America's Armed Forces Create Serial Killers and Mass Murderers." was apparently removed from liberal publication Daily Kos, as well as the author’s personal website due to the backlash the posting has received since being displayed Thursday night. However, the post has since returned to “In Cold Blog”.

Markos Moulitsas, the blogger behind Daily Kos, comments that "There are almost 1,000 diaries written every single day on Daily Kos," he writes. "I don't keep track of all of them." Corey Mitchell, the author of the article says "It's not my intention to denigrate the troops; it's to help them when they get back."

This article marks one of the rare occasions that conservatives and liberals alike step forward to speak publicly against an article that speaks unfavorably of the United States Military. Some of the publications that have released comment on this article include NewsBusters, Ace Of Spades, Sadly No, and The Jawa Report.
