Harriet Miers Withdrawal Still Keeps Her In the Process
Harriet Miers' withdrawal from consideration for the U.S. Supreme Court was a brilliant move. Now the President can get someone in whom the Senators cannot quibble with. They used up their fight, so anything they do now will be a reflection of bad politics. You have to admit that it was a stroke of genius on the side of Bush, since all the analysts had been saying there was going to be a battle for whoever came after Roberts.
The Republicans should be ashamed of themselves for how they acted. It is one thing to disagree behind closed doors, but another to take it to the press. They had decided from day one not to give Ms. Miers a chance, and that is sad. She revealed the kinks in the Republican Party. Don’t they know that the American people will not forget how they dealt with this woman?
Supposedly the issue to withdraw came because of the desire of some of the Senators to see how she advised the President. They wanted to know all her thoughts on the cases she was pursuing for him. Well, any idiot could see the writing on the wall that her days were numbered. I guess she doesn’t mind since she still has a job and part of that will be helping the next nominee prepare for the Senate hearings. Ouch!!
Could their treatment of her come back to bite them in the behind? Everyone showed their hands, so she knows who really supports the President and who does not. Nice move I think.
Miers will only be a footnote and this time will seem like a dream, because the average person cannot even remember people who did not go the whole way.
Who the President picks next will most likely be an easy one. When all the junk started the minute Miers was nominated I am sure they had a backup plan. Who won this round is up to debate, but considering the stupid things that were said in the last few weeks, I give it to Bush and Miers. Why? They still get to choose and prep the next candidate.
