In the Northern Province of Kivu, over 5,000 Interahamwe militia, tribal militias, and government soldiers are now circling the Banyamulenge villages in the mountains between of the Sud-Kivu border. These extremist groups have the intention towards massacring people, similar to the 1996 massacre of the Bayamulenge when the Interhamwe used the pretence of fighting a Bayamulenge, thus it would seem to the world that this isn’t genocide in the making, but one of those so called tribal war that has been going on since the beginning of time. Those who have managed to escape have said the Interahawe are destroying the farms, killing cattle, and burning the villages. Women are the most vulnerable of violence and rape. According to some, these armed groups claim that they have orders to take anything that belongs to the Banyamulege, which would include food and shelter. This is causing people to flee, women being raped, losing their homes, and death. So far almost nothing is being done to stop the massacre not even the Mission of the UN in Congo (MONUC) whom are suppose to protect civilians, are indifferent to the on going violence. With that being said, the world especially the UN must take concrete steps to put an end to the mass murder of the Banyamulenge, or it might be a repeat of another genocide: Rwanda.
