Antiwar Backbone Stiffening in Congress?

Kevin Zeese
Recently there have been signs of hope that some Democrats in Congress who oppose the war are getting stronger in their opposition. There continue to be problems with the leadership of both parties, particularly the inexplicable inaction by Democratic Party leader Nancy Pelosi, but those who oppose the war are working to find new ways of speaking out and taking action.

Rep. Dennis Kucinich took an important action when he introduced a Resolution of Inquiry (HR 505) to demand the White House turn over all white papers, minutes, notes, emails or other communications kept by the White House Iraq Group (WHIG). This group, made up of top officials in the White House including the President and Vice President, was responsible for “selling” the Iraq War to U.S. voters and elected officials. A Resolution of Inquiry is a rare House procedure used to obtain documents from the Executive Branch. Under House rules, Kucinich's resolution is referred to committee, and action must be taken in committee within 14 legislative days. “For two-and-a-half years Congress has sat on the sidelines neglecting its oversight responsibility when it has come to Iraq,” said Kucinich urging action on his resolution.
