Anxiety and Tension

John L. Waters
Anxiety and tension make a baby tense and rigid without expression. The baby learns to be tense and rigid from its mother because for nine long months the mother contains the fetus and then for years after birth the mother holds the infant and the tension in the mother's bones and muscles is felt by the young child that so often is caught in the mother's clutches. The clutching mother isn't intending to be unkind! It's just that the mother feels tense and anxious and so she automatically and unconsciously transmits the tension and anxiety to her baby through the skeleto-muscular communications system.

"Eh?" You are probably saying to yourself. "That's a new one."

Well, just think of it this way. Some children see unusually well, some children hear unusually well, and some children taste and smell unusually well. Some children do not. Some children have very great sensitivity through their bones and their muscles. So when you put a baby who has this osteo-muscular OM sense in the clutches of an anxious and tense parent, well, the OM-sensitive infant receives the message and responds by feeling stiff, rigid, and anxious and may even resist being held by the parent who is unwittingly transmitting this horrid sense of discomfort. And so you have this rejection of ordinary parent-child communication by the so-called "autistic" infant and toddler. This rejection well may cause the parent to feel even more tense and anxious, not knowing what went wrong! Indeed this is a vicious positive feedback loop!

Now the child who is very sensitive in this OM sense may withdraw from all social contact in an over-reaction without ever understanding this positive feedback loop. What started as OM sensitivity evolves into "autism" because the parents got more anxious and tense with their OM osteo-muscular sensitive baby!

A playful dog, seal, porpoise, or person, whose OM communication is not anxiety, tension, and tight clutching, may cure the "autistic" child if he/she isn't yet too old! If the tense child is older, the relaxation will take longer. This idea can certainly be tested!

Warm water helps a person relax, and so does a warm climate. Moreover, being largely naked removes the tight clutching of clothes. Daily opportunity to move freely helps the boy or girl feel freer and more relaxed to move and even to utter the silly sounds of glee. Indeed, in this good OM environment, more joy is felt as more freedom is felt! The warm and bright subtropical garden beckons with promises of therapy! This therapy won't happen in winter in a polar climate or even in a temperate zone!

What am I driving at? Well, I am rooting for the body sense- the comfort that is felt and expressed in, by, of, and for the body. This OM comfort sense may be overlooked in a home or in a school where regular medical exams check the child's visual acuity and auditory acuity, but pay no attention at all to the child's sensitivity in his or her bones and muscles. As a consequence, for years and years young children are bundled up in tight-fitting trousers and jackets, and they wear tight-fitting rings, watches, caps, shoes, and belts. This tight clutching makes the OM-sensitive child especially feel tense and anxious. Living in ignorance of the OM sense, neither the child nor the child's parents may be able to find relief. Certainly, if the child does what comes naturally and runs freely and gleefully around naked, well, the authorities soon will put a stop to that.

In the clutches of uptight authorities, the tense child may gain some relief by hitting or by squirming or by fidgeting or by vocalizing. The intensity of response depends on the degree of the experienced tension and stress. A parent or a teacher may have no idea why the child acts out this way. One word for this acting out is "stimming." The "autistic" child "stims" to relieve tension. The tension blocks the child's learning and the child's expressiveness. It's a vicious positive feedback loop.

Some babies simply are born OM- sensitive. Life of nakedness in the warm womb is soon replaced by life in a cold world of tight garments and other tight confinements! The chronically withdrawn child needs to feel more warm and more free. An uptight culture produces many autistics, schizoids, or other withdrawn children. Day after day, week after week, month after month and year after year these young people grow up accustomed to communicating using violent outbursts, the ultimate form of which is letting go with a machine gun or with a bomb.

Daily contact with animals in a warm climate helps the tense anxiety-ridden child relax every day. The animals themselves are relaxed and they help the child relax, along with nakedness and bodily contact with relaxed creatures. Think of how often a person today lives with an animal pet and how such contact reduces blood pressure. Medical scientists already know this works.

In our culture, at home and at school people focus on clothes, letters, and other visual messages, and people focus on audio messages, without paying enough attention to Om-messages. The OM- sensitive child may grow up never knowing what's wrong, and through isolation autistic or schizophrenic persons tend to be unaware of things that other people are made aware of by reading and by conversation. Parents and doctors won't understand OM sensitivity unless some respected scientific authority wakes them up. Then they will need an OM Center where they can go feel the peace of OM itself, at the Peace Center. This medicine isn't really a religion, because vibrations are everywhere and churches and temples are not usually homes, hospitals, or schools.

OMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

In the humming above, each M should remind you that rocking the body fast or slow and other vibrations comfort both a child and an adult.

I grew up in Santa Barbara, California and was assessed as "probably brain damaged" in ninth grade. After receiving my BA from UC Santa Barbara in 1962 I taught Science in a private elementary school for two years and high school Mathematics for eighteen months. After June of 1968 I worked on treating myself. My recovery or partial recovery came after 1980 as I created a better health program and I started reading more, visiting more places, and meeting more persons. I need a collaborator.
