Abba, Thank You For The Music

Judy Ramsook
“If music be the food of love, play on

Give me excess of it, that, surfeiting…” Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night (1.1.1-7)

For the serious music lover, it has been there since one can remember, it’s a plant that never dies or a comfortable pair of shoes one does not get tired of wearing.

It’s there when one is happy, sad or if he/she needs a song or melody to uplift his/her soul.

And even on those stormy nights when there is no electric power, one can turn on his/her battery powered audio system and tune in to the desired radio station, and there it is too, music coming through the airwaves.

And although singers/musicians have come, gone or been long disbanded, there is at least one group that stands out as a favourite for whatever reason in the hearts of many.

For some, that favourite group of musicians could be The Beatles, The Who, Pink Floyd, and for others it could be a now disbanded Swedish quartet known as Abba.

With such infectious melodies as Fernando, Chiquitita, and a string of more hits including the unforgettable Dancing Queen, a true fan of the group just like a fan of any other band of musicians waited for the release of every album, paying close attention to the lyrics for the story within a song. It was an exciting time.

For one could not get enough of those catchy, sing along melodies. So true fans of the group yearned for more. And as they waited, the group that accumulated fans from the world over did not disappoint.

For Abba skillfully put out album after album and with the group’s unique style and harmony, each fan had a song with which he/she could identify.

For some it could have been ‘Money, Money, Money’ or ‘Tiger’ and for the dancer in the family, it could have been ‘Dancing Queen’ ‘Voulez-Vous’ or even ‘Does Your Mother Know.’

But whatever song it was that made a listener want to hit the replay button, Abba is just one of those groups that will linger on in the minds of a true Abba fan, and to that I say, Abba, Thank You For The Music.
