Assessing Your Skills

Instead of considering retirement as an inevitable event that will mark the end of your career, why not look at it as an opportunity for a career change. In fact, this is the time when you can actually do what you have always wanted to do, as you have fulfilled most of your responsibilities in life. There are plenty of courses out there to help you deal with this change and at the same time assist in identifying your strengths, weaknesses, values, and skills. Assessing your skills is crucial in order to decide what kind of career would be most satisfying. Being aware of your skills, and knowledge gives a definite direction to your career and helps you in making good career choices.

Now that you have identified your skills, it’s time to set realistic goals. Consider companies or industries that you may be interested to work for and accordingly create a target list of organizations. The next step is to find if they have job openings that require the kind of skills you have. For this purpose, you may have to invest a great deal of time in good research. You need to identify current market trends and reach out to target organizations. In order to seek out job opportunities, make sure that your resume is listed on job boards. There are many organizations that are keen on providing opportunities to mature workers and baby boomers to benefit from their invaluable experience they have gathered over the years.

When selecting job offers, you need to ensure that apart from giving you a handsome salary, the opportunity also utilizes your skills and knowledge. Typically, your new job must give you enough space to learn new skills and improve existing skills. It is also important that the new role aligns with the values you believe in and is in line with your job expectations.

During skill analysis, you will realize that there are number of skills that have deteriorated over time. In a highly competitive and changing work environment, skills and knowledge become obsolete within no time. To remain competitive, it is crucial that you upgrade your skills and knowledge. You must be innovative, tech savvy and must be willing to accept new challenges.

If you are currently working with an organization, professional development and training must be your main objective. You may sign up with various training courses that can help you enhance your skills. How about attending seminars and conferences to stay in touch with latest information? Invest as much time and money as you can in developing new skills, as they may become a stepping-stone for a new career.

If you are not working presently, use your free time to read articles written by eminent professionals from your field of interest. It is vital to know about the latest happenings and changes in your industry.

Now that you have acquired new skills and upgraded your old skills, make a good resume that highlights your knowledge and expertise. The main objective of developing a resume is to get noticed by prospective employers and to inform them about the skills and experience you possess. Networking can also be a great way of finding suitable job opportunities.
