Many people are turned off by demands for political contributions that lack any personal contact by candidates. Candidates are to often relying on television, radio, and newsprint to get their message out to the voters. Candidates Lincoln and Douglas stood on picnic tables in a city park and debated the issue of slavery. That debate is heralded today as one of the greatest before or since, It was 145 years ago, we haven’t seen the likes of it since.
Bill Clinton and Al Gore attempted to revive the old town hall meetings in Clinton’s first campaign for president. That didn’t last long, it became obvious to Clintons political handlers they weren’t reaching enough people, and K through 12 don’t vote. All their meeting were held in schools with children. What the voters want isn’t always possible to give. Davie Crocket gave each man who voted for him two swallows of Moon Shine. Today a single vote can cost into the four-figure range, and that’s without personal contact. I hold Republican Candidates to a higher standard than I do Democrats or Independents. We Republicans are the party of leaders, not pushers, facts not fiction, decorum not destruction, we are the party of a constitutional America, not a socialist America.
What’s the solution for generating more voter involvement? The Republican Party State Chairman sent me his 100 day Action Plan. There were many good points correcting past indifferences to the voters. The plan called for closer contact with voters, several new motions to inform voters of what the party is and intends to do in the coming months leading up to the 2006 elections. After reading the several e-mails I received from the Chairman and his assistant I’m convinced they intend to make the State Republican Party a party of the voters and not the party flunkies.
Ideally, there would be limitations on the number of terms a person could serve in congress. Two terms for the Senate and three terms for the House of Representatives,. There’s a limitation of two terms on the Presidency, there’s no reason not to extend it to Congress as well. More young people would engage in politics if they thought their voice would be heard. Many men seek government service after they have made their mark in the world. It’s their way of giving back. As it stands now few are willing to suffer the scrutiny it takes to get there. Congress is filled with persons who come from old political dynasties. They serve in perpetuity as have their families. What chance do novas politicians have in this environment?
My state is one of those mid-west blue states, what chance do Republicans have? With a new aggressive Republican Party, one that will make the voters inclusive, and not treat them like they’re incidental too the process, perhaps in a few elections my state will turn a bright Rosy Red.
So far, I’m impressed with what I’ve seen of the new Republican Party leaders in my state. I’ll give them an election before I pass final judgment.
My State is “Michigan.”
