The Blue Man Group - Not Just A TV Band Anymore

John T. Darrah
Most people will reognize The Blue Man Group from the advertisements for Intell processors. Please, do not be fooled by their commercial success - this band can rock.

Kicking things off for "The Complex" is the track titled "Above”. It begins with a heavy dose of drums mixed in with their unique style for making insturments from virtually nothing. I wouldn't quite call this track 'rock', but it defnitly is rocking. Short and sweet it is, but it only leaves you wanted more from the trio.

Track #7, entitled "Piano Smasher", brings home the bacon. With it's great beat and a melody played on who-know's-what, you will have to listen to this track numerious times just to appreciate all of it's components! The liquid guitar is a nice added effect too.

Track #9, my personal favorite, calls on Gavin Rossdale for added vocals. This track has an almost trip-hop feel to it. Once again, The Blue Man Group's heavy bassline is one of the first things you notice. But, what sets this track apart from the others is the rock-style guiatrs. Gavin's voice blends very smoothly into this mixture of rock/electronica/expierimental music.

After seeing them live, as well as listening to their CD, I can say this: If you ever have the chance to see this band live, DO IT! But, if you can't make it to one of their shows, just pickup a copy of "The Complex" and your head will be bobbing for days at a time.
