There are many myths about oily skin. You must know all the scientific facts about oily skin so that-

You remove excess oil,

You maintain optimum surface oils to protect your skin from bacteria.

The facts that you should know about oily skin are-

Oily skin is a genetic problem. You inherit the tendency to have oily skin. Sometimes hormones also play a role.

Oily skin caused by excess sebum produced by sebaceous glands. This problem can be because of heredity or hormonal changes.

Removing oil from top of the skin does not increase oil production. You can use any product safely to remove oils. Removing oils from the skin surface has no effect on oil production. Oil production does not increase.

Facial papers are safe to use. Many people believe that face oil blotting papers reduce sebum production. But that is not the truth. The papers only absorb the surface oils.

People with oily skin develop wrinkles later than those with dry skin.

Oil should not be removed totally from the skin. Oil with sweat makes the acid mantle, which creates a barrier for the bacteria. Over washing can leave the skin free to be attacked by bacteria. Oil protects the skin by forming acid mantle with sweat.


Isotretinoin(brand name- Accutane) is not a cure for oily skin. Isotretinoin does not reduce oil production substantially. Oil may return after stopping the use of Isotretinoin

Topical Retinoids can reduce oily skin problem substantially.

Glycolic and salicylic acid- AHA and BHA do not reduce oil production, but peel off the dead skin layer and remove the oils.
