Mayday, Mayday, Mayday, This Is The Internet Calling

Ken Hughes
The internet is under siege, The UN, EU, and an accumulation of other governments want America to either relinquish or share control of the World Wide Web. The British Newspaper, The Guardian considers it a forgone conclusion the internet will become the property of some form of international commission. If it does slip away from America, it will be the end of freedom of the press, as we know it. Losing control of the internet is one of our most serious issues we face, and it’s getting very little coverage in the mainstream press.

The internet’s one of those thing uniquely American. It was the brainchild of the US Military. The military kill people, break things, and dream up ways to improve what they do. They aren’t builders, they turn the creative end over to private contractors. In the beginning, the assumption was the internet was so complicated it would have no practical value to privet_industry or to the public. God Bless the Nerds, with some creative engineering they were able to convert the impractical to what has become mans greatest means of communication along with untold other uses.

Why are other countries so intent on sharing control? The internet’s worldwide and free now, why mess with success? What possible advantage can come from sharing. The internet accommodates every language. All the information in all languages is there on the web for all to share, and because it’s an American enterprise subject to competition it’s free for the most part.

Why are governments so intent of capturing control of the internet, MONEY ! Domain names are a potential gold mine. Not only are they a source of revenue they’re a source for controlling what people say, do, and think. Government control over domain names and e-mail address is a direct path to our thoughts and wallets. Our government, their government, or any government controlling the internet is as dangers as the government owning the air we breathe or the water we drink.

Michigan’s petite, blond, hottie, Governor Jennifer Granholm is among the first to attempt to tax internet sales from out of state. First it’s unconstitutional second who would abide by a law that can’t be enforced. Those Internet hucksters may look dumb but their not stupid. Governor Granholm hails from Vancouver Canada, where liberalism’s tolerated but not extreme enough for the average Canadian. Canada where taxation is an art_form. The rest of political America’s watching Michigan to see how this plays out.

We Americans have a tendency to let things slide until they become a crises. We’re facing many crises and the media isn’t reporting them as such. Holloway, DeLay, and Frist are out front on the evening news. Holloway hasn’t been found, DeLay hasn’t been convicted, and Frist hasn’t been charged. How do these stories get to be the news of the day? Why isn’t the media all over this attempt by foreigners to capture and pervert out Internet?

On the other side of the issue, the Nerds by either design or happenstance made the internet almost foolproof. It’s captured every country in the world. If any government wanted to, they couldn’t close down what’s been created. They could create their own World Wide Web, who would use it? Silly little men sit in their silly little offices conjuring up silly new ways to bilk the public out of their money and their freedom. It’s called bureaucracy, wherever government exist bureaucracy’s rule.

By design, bureaucracies are inefficient, the founding fathers saw to that. They gave us a constitution that takes a gaggle of lawyers and an ocean of paper to interpret. Fortunately even then no one can agree on what is, is. First, came the Founding_Fathers, then came the Nerds. Between the two, the Republic is safe.
