Dumping Syndrome: Getting Over it
The symptoms may appear immediately after eating or later, after three hours.
The symptoms that occur within fifteen or thirty minutes after meals include nausea, diarrhea, fatigue, vomiting, heart palpitations, abdominal pains, rapid heart rate, dizziness, cramps, belching, lightheadedness, or bloating.
The signs that indicate the existence of the dumping symptom and may appear later include dizziness, fainting, lightheadedness, fatigue, mental confusion, sweating, anxiety, weakness, rapid heart rate, nervousness, or heart palpitations.
The syndrome may be caused by the food that moves to the small intestine in an abnormal manner and occurs within fifteen percent of the people who had a stomach intervention. It usually appears within one to six months from surgery, and the bigger the part of the stomach that has been removed, the more severe the condition is. Researchers believe that the dumping syndrome may be also affected by gastrointestinal hormones.
The risk of developing the dumping syndrome is increased by certain types of stomach surgery. For instance, gastrectomy where the stomach or a portion of it, usually the pylorus, is removed and may lead to dumping syndrome. Gastroenterostomy may also cause dumping syndrome for people whose stomach is directly connected to the small intestine by surgery.
Vagotomy, a surgical procedure where the nerves to the stomach are cut to decrease the levels of acid, fundoplication, a procedure performed on people who suffer from gastroesophageal reflux disease, and gastric bypass surgery may also lead to dumping syndrome.
Dietary changes may make the symptoms of the dumping syndrome disappear on their own, or ameliorate them. Eating smaller meals, drinking fluids only between meals, or consuming more low-carb foods may help improve.
If the pectin intake is increased by consuming more fruits such as peaches, plums, fiber supplements, or apples, the carbohydrates absorption in the intestine is delayed. People who suffer from the rapid gastric syndrome should not consume acidic foods such as citrus fruits or tomatoes, and use baking, grilling, or broiling for cooking.
