FUSE: Searching for The Beginning of Creation

Dana G. Smith
Explorers traveling the oceans found America, or the land mass we know as America in their attempts to find a route to India and the spice trade. It was a venture born out of the need to find a quicker, cheaper way, and a less time consuming route. This need to find and know more is the basics of all Explorers today. It is part of man, that one part which does not allow for men to just sit down and not try to know more. This is the basics for what is probably one of the greatest attempts to discover the beginning of creation.

Explorer is part of the name known as the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer satellite. The acronym is FUSE, which is aptly named. For if one was to understand the underlying layers of FUSE, and then it would be clear. In electronics and electrical engineering, a FUSE is known as a 'fusible link'. [en.Wikipedi.org/wiki/Fuse_(electrical)]

The Fusing that man is attempting to do is find the permanent scientific link between the origins of the universe aka 'the big bang theory' and men on our planet earth. It is this seeking of the Knowledge of scientific truth that led to the creation of the FUSE project.

FUSE is funded by NASA and is part of its Origins program. It is that attempt to know these Origins that the program named Origins took up the challenge of answering the age old questions that have been pondered by men from all ages. It is here that mans science, knowledge, and technology hope to finally solve the questions, once and for all. As the Origins program states:

But science has also given us something that will help, by promising answers to our ancient questions: Where did we come from? Are we alone? When the answers to these questions are known, our civilizations will evolve new visions of who we are and what our futures might be. Already we have learned enough to appreciate that the universe is enormous and ancient, but life is its precious jewel. [www.origins.jpl.nasa.gov/about/index.html]

The FUSE was launched on June 24, 1999 from a Delta II Rocket. It was developed by the Johns Hopkins University in collaboration with the Canadian and French space agencies. Using Spectroscopy, which is according to FUSE documents, "a technique of analyzing light to derive quantitative information about the source of the light", FUSE uses the 'far ultraviolet light spectrum at high resolution'. [www.fuse.pha.jhu.edu/pubinfo/name.html]

Using the data from the FUSE enables scientists to learn about the objects in the Universe. By learning this, they can then tie it in to the 'big bang theory', the creation of the universe, and begin answering those age old questions. In one instance, according to a Press Release, titled "Surprising New Telescope Observations Shake up Galactic Formation Theories", the FUSE project was an important tool to learn more. Measuring deuterium-- which according to the release is:

a hydrogen isotope containing a proton and a neutron -- is believed burned and lost forever during star formation, scientists think the amount of deuterium present in the universe is "pure" and serves as a tracer for star creation and galaxy building over billions of years, said Linsky.

It is in tracing these elements that the FUSE measures, which allows scientists to put together a picture of the events in the universe. Major events like the 'big bang theory' can then be measured according to this science. In these measurements by FUSE, the release further states that:

"Where there are high concentrations of interstellar dust in the galaxy, we see lower concentrations of deuterium gas with FUSE," said Linsky. "And where there is less interstellar dust, we are measuring higher levels of deuterium gas."

In relatively undisturbed areas of the universe -- like regions around Earth's sun, for example -- deuterium atoms systematically "leave" the gas phase and replace normal hydrogen atoms in dust grains, said Linsky. When a pocket of the universe is disturbed by events like a supernova shock wave or violent activity triggered by nearby hot stars, the dust grains are vaporized, releasing deuterium atoms back into a gas, which has been measured by FUSE, the researchers said.

The science of men and the technology that has been created is being put to the test. This major test is to answer the age old questions of where did we come from and are we alone? For these men and many others, biblical arguments and doctrinal diatribes are not enough. For these men, science must pave the way. This paving is creating a pathway to the stars and beyond. It is like the tower of Babel in the Genesis account, in which, they said “Let us build a tower to the stars, for then we can see God.”

Just how far the universe is expanded is another question. Will we ever get to the end of it all seems to be mute right now. As we keep sending the instruments into space, there is always more space. With each one sent out, though, we find out more and more. Yet in all this knowing, we still cannot come to grips with the 'simple faith' required by the bible and the Lord Jesus Christ. It is this Christ who said 'unless you become like little children, you cannot enter the Kingdom of God’. For the child, they have a simple faith that takes what you tell them at face value.

Today, man cannot stop pressing ahead to find the beginning of the creation. It is that man is in the time of increased knowledge. It is this knowledge that is being put to use by the smartest of men today. In all their achievements they can observe, study, and try their best to find all the answers. In the end, they have not come to the end of the quest. Somewhere out there, beyond the furtherest structures of what we call Super Nova's and star systems is a God who is the beginning of the creation. It is there that all our attempts to know it all fall short.

When or if we finally get to the end of the creation, what will we find? Maybe a poster saying: "IAM, The beginning of All things. I have already been here, what took you so long?"..God
