Movies That Feature "Pervasive Smoking" May Be Hit With R Rating
"The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) today announced that the rating system is enhancing the amount of information provided to parents on the issue of smoking in films. In the past, illegal teen smoking has been a factor in the rating of films, alongside other parental concerns such as sex, violence and adult language. Now, all smoking will be considered and depictions that glamorize smoking or movies that feature pervasive smoking outside of an historic or other mitigating context may receive a higher rating."
Stop the insanity!
I'm not a smoker, and I certainly don't condone smoking, but this attempt by the MPAA to slap an "R" rating on motion pictures that feature pervasive smoking is insane.
Go to any Country and Western bar and everybody will be smoking; it wouldn't be the same if a director depicted the patrons sucking on lollipops instead of smoking.
In real life people indulge in all sorts vices that are unhealthy, illegal or immoral; a good movie reflects reality.
Overeating is as unhealthy as smoking, is every movie staring Rosie O'Donnell going to be hit with an "R" rating?
Global warming is a real concern, why not punish films that feature Hummers and other gas-guzzlers with an "R" rating?
Skin cancer is a major health issue; should flicks with an overabundance of tanned actors receive an "R" rating?
The MPAA should butt out of the behavior modification mode; they should be simplifying and not unnecessarily complicating their rating system.
