MS Word, Isn't It Great?

Judy Ramsook
Sometimes when I sit behind my desk, both hands on the keyboard and look at the computer before me, I wonder where would some of us be without the MS word programme.

Whether you use an Apple, or different brand of computer, if you want to write something more then just an email, just double click on the word programme icon on your desktop or from your programmes list menu and voila, there you are.

Ready to write that essay, poem, short story or even a longer work such as a book, if you can make the time, that is.

Of course, computer technology age or not, some people in our midst may not be as computer knowledgeable as others, for some one recently asked, and how do you know how many words you have written, do you count them manually?

At first the question came as a bit of a surprise, for I thought almost everyone knew that in order to find that out, you simply click on the tools button at the top of the screen, highlight WORD COUNT and then click on that. And there you are.

It brings up a little box with all that pertinent information. It tells you how many words you have written thus far, including how many characters with and without spaces, how many pages, paragraphs and even lines. And this might surprise some of you, but not everyone who owns a computer has this MS word or similar programme installed on his/her computer.

People who write nothing more than a few lines of an email do not. And some computers do not come equipped with the programme either, maybe just for that reason.

But they do come packaged with the MS Word programme on a separate disk. So should you desire to do any bit of lengthy writing, just install the programme. And there are more complex things you can do with the programme too.

You can change the font, the font colour and size to suit your liking and even add a bit of a background colour if you choose, and other things you can learn how to do by going through the tutorial or asking some one who is more MS word skilled than you are.

Just not too long ago, back in the early nineties, when computers were not as widely used or owned as they are today, I observed students using word processor machines to bang out that all important research paper or essay.

But now we have the MS word programme among other things and internet access all on one machine. Isn’t it great?
